Promoting Inclusivity and Fitness: Frontrunners & Briskwalkers Cork

June 07, 2024

Frontrunners & Briskwalkers Cork was founded in October 2018 as a welcoming running and walking club for Cork's LGBTQIAP+ community. Over the years, the group has grown, fostering a vibrant and supportive environment for all its members.

Mission and Vision

The club's mission is to encourage members of the LGBTQIAP+ community and their allies to stay active through regular running or brisk walking sessions. Participants meet up and train at least twice a week. As an affiliated member of AAI Athletics Association Ireland, Frontrunners & Briskwalkers Cork is dedicated to inclusivity and fitness.

A Place for Everyone

Frontrunners & Briskwalkers Cork welcomes individuals of all fitness levels. Whether someone is an experienced runner or just beginning, they will find a supportive and social environment within the club. The club offers a safe space for LGBTQIAP+ members to get fit, improve their running, and make friends.

Members regularly take part in various races, including 5km and 10km runs, as well as half and full marathons. Regardless of fitness level or personal goals, there is a place for everyone in their group. The club's brisk walking section also operates alongside the regular schedules, ensuring everyone can participate and stay active.

Building Connections

Beyond physical activities, Frontrunners & Briskwalkers Cork provides opportunities for members to make new connections and friendships. These include post-run and post-walk socials, complete with coffee and catch-ups.

Creating a Safe Space

LGBTQIAP+ individuals often face challenges in sports due to anticipated rejection, past negative experiences, and discriminatory attitudes. Frontrunners & Briskwalkers Cork aims to counteract these issues by offering an inclusive space where all genders, identities, and sexualities are welcomed without judgment. The club fosters a supportive environment for making new friends and connecting with others over shared interests and physical activity.

Club training takes place twice weekly:

  • Mondays at 7 PM in Kennedy Park
  • Saturdays at 10 AM at the Marina Market Carpark

These sessions provide structured opportunities for members to improve their fitness while enjoying the camaraderie of fellow runners and walkers. The group accommodates various paces and distances, ensuring everyone feels included.
