The evening session of Day 4 at the European Athletics Championships was the quietest for Irish competitors so far, with only three athletes in action.
Nicola Tuthill was first up, competing in the final of the Women's Hammer Throw. She finished 9th overall with attempts of 66.85m, 69.09m, and 66.29m, a solid performance for a promising young athlete.
The next event was the highly anticipated Women's 400m final, featuring Sharlene Mawdsley and Rhasidat Adeleke. The race culminated in a hotly contested final 100 metres, with Adeleke and Polish athlete Natalia Kaczmarek neck and neck in the home stretch. Adeleke briefly led before being overtaken by the more experienced Kaczmarek in the last 20 metres, ultimately have to settle for a silver medal. Adeleke's incredibly quick time of 49.07 set an under-23 European and Irish national record in the process. Her silver adds another medal to Ireland's haul, bringing their total to two golds and one silver. Despite a big effort from Sharlene Mawdsley, she finished 8th with a time of 51.59.
