Team Ireland concluded the World Masters Athletics Championships on Sunday, August 25th, with a series of outstanding performances, securing multiple medals across various events. The Irish athletes demonstrated their abilities once more on the final day of the competition, bringing home two golds, two silvers, and two bronze medals.
In the 20km race walk, Ireland shone bright with Sean McMullin claiming a bronze medal in the M75 category, completing the race in 2:26:23. Sinead McConnell also delivered a strong performance, finishing third in the W55 category with a season-best time of 1:59:38.
The 1500m finals saw four athletes from Team Ireland taking to the track. Gerard Hugh O’Reilly competed valiantly in the M75 final, securing 16th place with a time of 7:12.35. In the M70 final, Brian Lynch ran an impressive race, earning a silver medal with a time of 5:22.58. In the W40 final, Fiona Keogh claimed gold with a dominant performance, finishing in 4:38.50. Eimear Marie English also competed in the W40 final, narrowly missing out on the podium with a 4th place finish in 5:16.44.
Ireland’s relay teams brought more glory to the nation in the 4x400m events. The W40 women’s team, consisting of S. Betchtina, A. Quaid, S. O’Regan, and E. Maguire, captured silver with a season-best time of 4:09.35. On the men’s side, the M45 team, featuring G. Cremin, K. Pollard, C. Haddock, and J. Phelan, struck gold, finishing first with a season-best time of 3:33.63. The M40 team also put in a solid performance, finishing 7th out of 11 teams, with B. Boyce, Shane O’Sullivan, R. Kedney, and T. Shiels clocking a season-best 3:41.89.
