This Sunday, November 10th, Raheny’s St Anne’s Park will host the Polish Independence 10k, an event that not only celebrates running but also marks a significant historical moment: the resurgence of Poland as an independent state on November 11th, 1918.
A Historical Milestone
On November 11th, 1918, after 123 years of partition and foreign rule by Austria-Hungary, Prussia, and Russia, Poland regained its independence at the end of World War I. This date is a cornerstone of Polish national identity, symbolising the resilience and determination of the Polish people. The Polish Independence 10k commemorates this pivotal moment, connecting history with the present-day vibrancy of the Polish community in Ireland.
A Young Tradition with Deep Roots
Despite its relatively recent inception, the Polish Independence 10k has quickly become a popular fixture in Dublin’s winter running calendar. The race began during the challenging days of the Covid-19 pandemic, with its first two editions in 2020 and 2021 taking place virtually. Runners participated from their own localities, united in spirit if not in proximity.
In 2022, the race finally found its physical home in the scenic surroundings of St Anne’s Park, Raheny. The shift to an in-person event was warmly welcomed, allowing the community of Polish Runners Club Ireland and their supporters to come together in celebration and remembrance.
Steady Growth and a Unique Medal
The race has experienced consistent growth, with the event selling out and race organisers expecting 250 runners this year, up from an initial 100. One of the race’s highlights is its bespoke medal, designed each year by the club’s talented graphic designer, Kaz Hauasa.
The event also offers more than just a race, it's a community gathering. After crossing the finish line, runners and supporters can enjoy a selection of Polish treats, including coffee, tea, traditional cakes, and freshly baked bread.
A Community Effort
The success of the Polish Independence 10k is a testament to the dedication of volunteers and the support of sponsors. Their combined efforts ensure that every aspect of the event runs smoothly, from the race logistics to the post-run hospitality. This collaborative spirit embodies the essence of the Polish Runners Club Ireland: a community united by a shared love of running and a deep connection to their heritage.
As the Polish Independence 10k continues to grow, it not only commemorates Poland’s independence but also strengthens the bonds within Dublin’s diverse running community.
