West Limerick AC – February 2015 Review

This was a busy month for club athletes. Seven athletes headed to the John Tracey Dungarvan 10 mile race. I must say that this is a very well organised day out with some top quality entrants. Niall O Riordan and Gerard Guinawere up towards the front with Declan O Keeffe, Edel , Kevin O Donoghue, Paul Crotty and Conor Lovette racing also.

Carmel was in Tuam doing what she does best and winning gold at the National Masters XC.

The big inter club championship race was the county 4 mile hosted by an Bru AC. It was a windy day but that didnt stop two great races. From a West Limerick perspective we had a great turnout of 25 athletes and this makes the club days out special. The womens teams came 2nd in Senior and 1st place in Novice while the mens team was 3rd in both Senior and Novice. Carolyn Hayes won both the novice and senior titles with Noelle Ahernerunning very well to finish in third. Niall O Callaghan ran well and finished third in the mens.

In the Tralee 10 mile we had Ian Kelly, Shane Kelly, Niamh Mulcahy and Kevin Sheahan competing while in the Mount Juliet Half marathon we had Ailbhe Dempsey,Edel and Paul. The West Limerick singlet was getting some milage around the country.

Of course the big club race was the Adare 10k. This is our big club race and despite some wet conditions we had over 600 hundred athletes take part. The volunteers and stewards did great work. The members of the club and friends of the club helped us run a successful race. The race on the day saw the course record being broken by Alan O’Shea of Bantry in a time of 31.16. Our own Mike O’Brien came 3rd in a time of 33.49 to become the first winner of the Willie Costello cup. The inaugural winner of the Corn na Mban cup wasCarolyn Hayes. Carolyn also became the first West Limerick woman to finish the race in first place.
It was a good sign as these two athletes would both go on to have an excellent 2015.
