May was a very busy month for all athletes. There were pbs galore and some huge milestones reached for the athletes of West Limerick. From my count there were 46 athletes competing on the bank holiday weekend at various races.veroxybd.com
The big event at the start of the month was the Great Limerick Run which had a 6 mile, half marathon and full marathon. The half marathon also doubled up as the county half marathon championship. The conditions were awful for all the 13000 people that participated on the day.
Most people had been training for this weekend since Janurary and there were around 8 athletes in the 6 mile race. Niall & Noelle finishing up near the front.
We had 19 in the Half marathon and the performance of the day went to Mike O Brien who finished in 5th place overall and first limerick man home in a fast time of 1 hour 13 minutes. There were some great results throughout the club on the day in such humid conditions.
In the Full marathon we had 9 competiting. I must mention Mark Lenihan who on his second marathon did very well to finish in a time of 3 hours 34 minutes. Ailbhe Dempsey ran an outstanding race to finish in 3 hours 24 minutes.
On the same weekend was the Monagea 6 mile run for CRY. This race had Declan guina in 1st place and Sean Mc in 3rd. 5 club members took part.
Over in Clare at the Tulla 10k Fiachra was continuing his excellent form setting a 10k pb. Carmel was fourth in the female finishers. A productive trip to the home county.
Grace O Donnell and Kate Downes competed in the North Munster Schools with Kate winning Silver.
There was a good representaion at the Juvenile Track and Field County Championships. So many of our younger athletes did very well on the day.
County Senior Track and Field was held in Ul with Ger , Maura O Dea and Paula Collins coming home with medals.
Carolyn Hayes was making the podium at the Majorca 70.3 Ironman as one of the top amateur entrants. Rachel Hayes also competed. The conditions were slightly better than Ireland at the time. Rachel would go on to have some seriously good results on the tri circuit as the year progressed.
The Mungret 10k had Edel running for the 3rd day in a row. A tough lady. Sophie Moroney also competed.
The stand out County Track and Field athletes over two nights for West Limerick were Sean Mc and Maura O’Dea.
In the Kilmallock 5 mile Noelle was 1st lady home and Fiachra was 3rd overall.
Derek completed his 75th marathon in the Tullaroan marathon along with Edel, Paul, John and Michelle Burke.
