The Welsh capital takes centre stage this afternoon as Cardiff hosts the only World Athletics Cross Country Tour Gold event in Britain this year. Taking place at the Llandaff Fields will draw over 700 athletes from across the globe, including several Olympians and World Championship regulars.
Runners from Kenya, Uganda, Morocco, Canada, Spain, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Ireland are set to tackle the fast and open Cardiff course, with plenty of international firepower on both start lists. Uganda’s Daniel Kibet, who finished third here last year, returns for another crack at the men’s 9.6km title, while Kenyan standouts Mathew Kipsang, Victor Kimosop, and Stephen Kimutai add serious depth to the field.
In the women’s 6.4km race, Uganda’s Charity Cherop is chasing back-to-back victories after winning in 2024. She’ll face stiff competition from last year’s runner-up Sheila Jebet of Kenya and British contender Kate Axford, who was third here twelve months ago.
Flying the flag for Ireland this weekend will be Keelan Kilrehill, the reigning national cross-country champion, joined by Kirsty Maher, Danielle Donegan, Amy Greene, and Mary Mulhare. It’s a strong Irish presence in one of Europe’s top early-season cross-country meets, and Kilrehill in particular will be keen to test himself against some of the best endurance runners in the world.
