While the eyes of the world were fixed on the digital clocks at the finish line of the London Marathon, watching Sebastian Sawe dismantle the two-hour barrier in a historic 1:59:30, the Irish athletics community was witnessing a seismic shift of its own.
In a superb performance, Kilkenny City Harriers’ Peter Lynch has reclaimed the Irish marathon record, stopping the clock at a blistering 2:06:08.
Finishing an incredible 9th overall in the most competitive field ever assembled, Lynch didn't just break the record; he smashed it. The time represents a nearly two-minute improvement over the previous mark of 2:07:54, set by Youghal AC’s Fearghal Curtin at the Gyeongju Marathon in South Korea just last October.
The Return of the King
For Lynch, today was the culmination of a year-long game of musical chairs at the top of the Irish all-time lists.

Lynch, currently training with the PUMA Elite group under the tutelage of former Irish record holder Alistair Cragg, ran a masterfully judged race. Going through the halfway point in 1:03:14, he remained composed as the lead pack, chasing Sawe’s historic sub-2 pulled away.
As the race entered the "pain cave" of the final 10 kilometers, Lynch began his surge. Passing established world-class stars on the Embankment, he turned onto The Mall looking remarkably fluid, crossing the line as the first European finisher.
