The Sydney Marathon has achieved something extraordinary. It has found a route from Australia to Germany without adding a single metre to the race.Around 40,000 runners will tackle 42.2 kilometres through Sydney on Sunday, passing the Harbour Bridge, the Opera House and Allianz Stadium. They will then receive a medal featuring the Harbour Bridge, the Opera House and the Allianz Arena in Munich. It is a lovely reminder of the course, apart from the bit located roughly 16,000 kilometres away.
The medal was meant to depict Allianz Stadium in Sydney. Instead, somebody apparently searched for an Allianz stadium, found the home of Bayern Munich and decided the investigation was complete. Both venues have Allianz in the name, so you can understand the confusion. There were only a few clues available, such as the buildings looking completely different, being in different cities, different countries and different hemispheres. In fairness, checking all that could have taken nearly fifteen seconds.
The truly impressive part is not that somebody made the mistake. People make mistakes every day. The impressive part is the number of people who must have looked at it and said nothing. A designer saw it. The organisers saw it. The medal company saw it. Somebody approved the final proof. Then 40,000 copies were produced.
At no point did one person lean towards the screen and ask, “Why does Sydney appear to have acquired Bayern Munich’s stadium?”
This was not a spelling mistake buried on page 86 of a race manual. It was engraved into metal thousands of times. That takes commitment. Some people have suggested artificial intelligence may have been involved. There is no proof of that. Human intelligence has been producing work of this standard for centuries and deserves proper credit.
The organisers called the mistake “a little too much international flavour”. That is a superb piece of corporate language. Your medal contains the wrong continent, but think of it as flavour. By that logic, if your hotel gives your room to somebody else, that is a surprise social experience. If your flight lands in Belgium, the airline has simply added some international flavour to your holiday.
The organisers also announced that they were “not going to run from it”. A good line. It is just a pity nobody ran the design past someone who had visited Sydney.
They will not replace the medals. Instead, they have described the faulty version as “a little more unique”. So is a passport with somebody else’s face on it. That does not make it more valuable.
First Nations artist Ambrose Killian, who created the artwork on the front and the ribbon, quickly clarified that he had nothing to do with the reverse. That clarification arrived with the speed of a man who had noticed his good name drifting towards a large public bonfire.
In plain English, his message was simple: This is not my fuckup. The Munich business belongs to the grown adults with access to Google.
The organisers also reminded everyone that each medal represents months of early mornings, long runs and quiet determination. For the runners, absolutely. For whoever checked the medal, it appears to represent one hurried image search before lunch.
There is something almost poetic about becoming a World Marathon Major and then immediately proving that major status does not include major attention to detail.
Sydney joined the most prestigious marathon series on the planet. It now stands beside London, Boston, Berlin, Chicago, Tokyo and New York. Munich has apparently joined as well. Nobody told Munich.
The medal will probably become a collector’s item. Runners will laugh about it for years. In time, it may become one of the most memorable medals the event has produced.That does not make the mistake clever. It means the mistake was so enormous that the organisers have accidentally created memorabilia.
Still, they can learn from it.
Next year’s medal should be ready in no time. Put the Eiffel Tower beside the Statue of Liberty, add the Colosseum near the finish and squeeze Cork Airport behind the Opera House. Then send it straight into production.
Checking it would only spoil the surprise.
