September 12, 2024

The 2024 edition of the Irish Mountain Running Association (IMRA) West League saw an unprecedented level of participation, with 336 trail runners competing in 11 exciting races spread across the scenic landscapes of Donegal, Sligo, Mayo, Roscommon, and Galway. The league has grown dramatically over the past year, expanding from just five races in 2023 to a thrilling 11-race series this year. Having wrapped up at the end of August, it's time to look back on the year that was for mountain running in the West.

Ahead of the season, we caught up with Turlough Conway, the League Director, who shared his vision for the league's growth. His aim was not only to attract more participants but to create a sense of community and belonging among those already passionate about mountain running in the region. Judging by the numbers and the atmosphere at each event, it’s safe to say that vision became a reality. With 336 participants lacing up and taking to the trails, the IMRA West League has solidified its reputation as a must-attend event.

The success of the IMRA West League 2024 wouldn’t have been possible without the tireless efforts of so many. Massive credit goes to each and every runner who participated in the races. From seasoned veterans to first-time racers, the energy and enthusiasm was palpable at every event.

Special recognition must also go to the race directors who worked so hard to bring these events to life, ensuring each race was as challenging as it was enjoyable. And, of course, none of this would have been possible without the incredible volunteers who donated their time, energy, and passion to support the runners and make the league such a resounding success.

As we reflect on a season of personal bests, new friendships, and breathtaking mountain views, there’s already a buzz of excitement for next year’s league.
