The first ever running of the Clonakilty 5 Mile Road Race took place lastSunday 28th of January, with the large field of runners embarking from the Park Hotel Clonakilty right on 10am. The event that was organised as a charity event had set out with modest expectations in putting on a race that would allow the local & running community support the two benefactors - Irish Red Cross & Cork Cancer Connect - but thanks to the generosity and interest of both communities & general public , the event would sell out ahead of time and see over 700 participants take to the start line.
It may have been slightly overcast but that could not be said of the atmosphere. Akin to a small festival, family and friends gathered in great mood to support the causes and to share in this inaugural event. Distance specialists, casual joggers, chatting walkers and have-a-go heroes all stood shoulder and shoulder and set out on the course to complete the distance in their own particular manner.
The course that greeted them was a gentle wind around Clonakilty Bay, with a not so gentle wind out early to meet them. The colourful crowd took in the beauty of the bay, and cast their eyes out towards Inchydoney, perhaps wishing for a towel, a tan, and a beer! With their efforts near completion, the seven hundred plus participants headed back up the previously gentle drive to the hotel, only to find it had seemingly grown significantly in height in their absence. Finally, crossing the finish line, the participants were greeted with an array of refreshments, a caravan load of prizes and the unending gratitude of both the committee & our charities.
No two races were the same, but everyone who took to the course had done something equally incredible; helping those who so selflessly help so many others. A hugely successfully event, the committee wants to thank every volunteer, marshal, Gardai, tea & coffee special force member, registrar and all who did their little bit in creating an incredible day.
Oh, and start those stretches - and Clonakilty Road Race will see everyone again in 2025!
