On Sunday, September 1, the Knockmealdowns mountain race brought the 2024 IMRA Munster Championship to a thrilling close. This final race, set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Knockmealdowns mountain range, tested participants with a demanding 7.6-kilometre course that packed in an impressive elevation gain of nearly 900 metres. The steep ascents and challenging terrain made it a true test of endurance and strength for all competitors.
In the women’s category, Kealey Tideswell emerged victorious, finishing in first place after a top performance. Close behind her were Anita Locke, who took second, and Deirdre O'Gorman, rounding out the top three.
On the men’s side, Patrick O'Driscoll claimed the top spot, crossing the finish line in first place after a brilliant run. Sean Quirke, a consistent frontrunner throughout the season, finished in second place, followed by John Leonard in third.
The race also saw the crowning of the 2024 IMRA Munster Champions. Mary Louise Ryan claimed the title in the women’s category after a season of outstanding performances. In the men’s category, Sean Quirke, who had a strong finish in the final race, secured the overall championship title. A huge congratulations to both champions for their incredible achievements throughout the season from all of us at Run Republic.
The final race was a testament to the hard work of Race Director Robert Cunningham and his team of volunteers. Their meticulous planning and effort ensured a smooth and enjoyable race for all participants, from the race logistics to the safety measures in place. The Knockmealdowns proved to be a fitting and memorable venue for the championship’s conclusion, leaving participants both exhausted and elated after a hard-fought season.
