Liam Foley's journey from road races to double gold at the Trisome Games 2024 has been nothing short of inspiring. Geraldine, Liam's mother, shared her perspective with Run Republic, shedding light on Liam's remarkable achievements and the emotions that accompanied them.
Liam's confidence is palpable, not just in his demeanour before races but also in his belief in his abilities. Geraldine recalls that while Liam exudes confidence, their circle of coaches and family members approached his debut in track events with hope rather than certainty. Liam had been a familiar face in road races for six years with Trim AC, consistently participating in 5k, 10k, and half marathons. Despite his respectable times, his form varied, and he often found himself distant from the medal positions, being the sole participant with down syndrome in those events. However, everything changed when he ventured into track events at the DS European Championships in Padua, Italy, in September 2023.
The European Championships marked Liam's entry into track racing, where expectations were modest, aiming to avoid being left behind. To everyone's amazement, Liam clinched victories in both the 800m and 1500m races, defying odds and surpassing perceived limits. Liam broke the European record in the 800m in Italy, shaving 7-seconds off the record. This unexpected success set the stage for the Trisome Games in Turkey, where Liam's potential was better understood, fostering hope for a podium finish.
Despite a gap between the European Championships and the Trisome Games, Liam's confidence in pacing grew. Learning from his experiences in Italy, he approached the Trisome Games with a refined strategy, maintaining composure and avoiding early pace setters. Instead, he strategically increased his pace, resulting in improved times in both the 800m and 1500m races. Notably, Liam shattered the European record in the 1500m, adding another feather to his cap.
For Liam, winning was not just a goal but an expectation he fulfilled with ease. Embracing the accolades and praise showered upon him, Liam revels in the joy of his achievements. His wide circle of friends, family, colleagues, and club members celebrates his success, recognising the hard work and dedication that led to this moment.
Geraldine and Liam's family stand in awe of his accomplishments, their pride transcending words. Liam's journey epitomises resilience, determination, and the power of self-belief. His story inspires countless individuals, showcasing that barriers can be broken, and dreams can be realised.
