Many Long and Winding Roads...

July 28, 2015

As you may know, or should know at this stage, I am going to be the first person to run the 50 miles from Dublin to Electric Picnic in Stradbally, Co. Laois. It will be my first attempt at such a distance, but I'm not one to shy away from a challenge.

Yesterday morning, I set out at shortly after 6am to run to work. The morning was sunny with a refreshing gentle breeze keeping me cool along my way. With the build up to my 50 Mile run, I have taken to running with a 10K bag to put my legs under as much stress as possible. The training effect of most exercises is increased when you work out wearing a weighted backpack. Walking, jogging, running, body weight exercises and sports are all more challenging as your muscles and cardiovascular system have to work harder than normal.

The route I took was a new one, a road less traveled. It was refreshing to run along new roads. Each footpath, every mile offers a different challenge and help to keep the mind occupied rather than the drudgery of running the same roads every day. Running into Dublin City Centre on a sunny morning is a great experience. As I crossed the River Liffey and ran down the docklads, the river shimmering as the sun reflected off the ripples, I felt great.

Crossing over to the Southside of Dublin, I ran by St. Stephen's Green, passing dreary eyed workers plodding there way to yet another Monday. Full of life, I marched through the streets, knowing that with every step, my goal of completing the 50 Miles was becoming an achievable goal. The final hill into Paddy Power HQ in Clonskeagh was something I cherished, a final challenge at the end of my Monday morning run.

In total, it was only 16.2K, nothing major, but an enjoyable run nonetheless. It took me 1h27m.

When work was over, I cycled back the same route reaching a max speed of 43.5 kmph. It was a great feeling to get out and get some training in. Hopefully the rest of the week will go as well as Monday.
