March 22, 2024

This weekend, mountain running enthusiasts are gearing up for the exhilarating Torc Wood IMRA race, part of the Coillte Winter/Spring Trail League. Organised by Race Director, Joe O'Leary, this event promises a challenging yet rewarding experience amidst the breathtaking scenery of Torc Wood.

As anticipation builds, a significant number of eager participants have already registered, with over 50 runners signed up and expectations of doubling this figure by the race's closing tomorrow evening. With an entry limit set at 130, competition is expected to be fierce as runners vie for top honours on the course.

Joe O'Leary brings a wealth of experience to the event, having recently clinched victory and set a new record at the Spine Race earlier this year. Under his guidance, runners can expect a meticulously planned course that promises both thrilling challenges and breathtaking vistas.

The race kicks off just beyond the barrier, with participants easing into a steady climb along forest double tracks, setting the stage for the thrilling journey ahead. A 2.5-kilometre descent down a steep grassy hill awaits, followed by a picturesque traverse past Killegy Lodge along the Queens Drive.

The true test begins as runners delve into the heart of Torc Wood, navigating the winding twists and turns of the "Lemmings" single track. Amidst the towering trees and natural reservoirs, participants will find themselves immersed in the tranquility of the forest, before tackling the adrenaline-pumping ascents of "Murphs Trail" and "Bomb Holes."

With each twist and turn, runners will be treated to a diverse array of terrain, from mossy downhill stretches to lung-busting uphill climbs. Along the way, the stunning surroundings of Torc Wood serve as a constant reminder of the beauty of nature, inspiring participants to push their limits and embrace the challenge.

As the race draws to a close, runners will navigate the final stretch, propelled by the promise of the finish line just ahead. With every step, a sense of accomplishment permeates the air, as participants celebrate their journey through the rugged landscapes of Torc Wood.

In the spirit of sustainability, participants are encouraged to bring their own cups, as disposable cups will not be provided at the event. Additionally, trail shoes with good grip are recommended to tackle the varied terrain with confidence.

For those looking to share the excitement with younger runners, a kids' race is scheduled for 10:15, followed by a short course at 10:30, offering an opportunity for runners of all ages and abilities to join in the adventure.

As the countdown begins to race day, anticipation is running high for the Torc Wood IMRA race, where participants will embark on an unforgettable journey through the heart of Ireland's natural beauty, guided by the expertise of Race Director Joe O'Leary and fueled by the spirit of adventure.
