TRIPLE IRISH VICTORY AT WORLD RACEWALKING TOUR IN GUADIX

There was a triple Irish victory at the XXXVI Gran Premio de Marcha Atlética in Guadix, Spain today. The World Racewalking Tour event featured u23 European Medallist David Kenny (Ireland) and World and Olympic Champion Maria Perez (Spain). Kenny secured victory in the men's 20km event. In the u18 5km, Matthew Newell (Tuam) won the boys and Savannagh O'Callaghan (Tuam) won the girls races. Both athletes participated at the European u18 Championships in Slovakia last year. A contingent of over 90 supporters and athletes were in attendance to witness the victories.

Irish Racewalkers set for Guadix

This Sunday a large contingent of Irish racewalkers will take part in the World Athletics Bronze Tour competition - the Grand Prix of Guadix. Home to double World and Olympic champion Maria Perez, the Spanish city has in the past been the training grounds for many international race walkers including Ireland's Robert Heffernan and Brendan Boyce. Competing over 20km will be former European u23 silver medallist David Kenny (Farranfore Maine Valley) who missed the Paris Olympics last year due to injury. Kenny along with the Tuam AC duo of Matthew Newell and Savanagh O'Callaghan will be hoping to make indents into qualifying standards for this year's majors.
