It was roads, rhythm and roars of encouragement in West Cork on Sunday as the town of Dunmanway once again played host to one of the most beloved local races on the calendar. The Dunmanway 10K brought over 400 runners to the line, from club athletes chasing PBs shoulder to shoulder with locals out for a laugh, a walk, and just a good excuse to have a scone at the finish.
The air was thick with excitement long before the starts. Lads in club vests warmed up next to buggies and dogs on leads. There were water stations, music en route, volunteers giving out high-fives, and refreshments to look forward at the finish line , a proper West Cork welcome, in every sense.
And the racing? That didn’t disappoint either.
Fastest on the Day
In the men’s race, it was Danny Mullins who led the field home with a strong solo run, crossing the line in an impressive 33:12. Behind him came Mark Walsh and Michael Dullea, both keeping the pressure on but ultimately Mullins prevailed. The women’s title went to Siobhán Holland, who paced her effort superbly and took the win in 43:24, with Hillary Walsh and Sinéad O’Regan rounding out the top three.
Local Pride and Podiums
It wasn’t just about the top-tier talent though. Among the homegrown heroes, Ivan Sweetnam, Nathan O’Donovan, and Donal Rice claimed the men’s first, second and third and local bragging rights, while Susan Collins, Anna O’Neill, and Claire McSweeney led the 1,2,3 for the local women.
As ever, none of it would have been possible without the sheer army of volunteers, stewards, sponsors, and supporters who line the route, man the tables, and make the whole thing tick. It’s not every town that can pull off an event like this and make it feel like a homecoming for all who take part.
