Ireland will have two genuine medal prospects to look forward to tomorrow evening after Rhasidat Adeleke and Mark English secured their places in European Championship finals on a superb day three in Birmingham. Below is the full roundup.
Becker Claims Final Qualification Place
Sophie Becker opened Ireland’s day in the first heat of the women’s 400m, finishing fourth with a season’s best of 52.28.
Becker faced an anxious wait through the remaining heats to learn if her time would be enough.
The Irish international ultimately secured the 13th and final place in the semi finals. It was tight, but Becker did what was required and will return on Thursday with another opportunity to build on her season’s best.
English Smashes Championship Record with Superb Semi Win
The performance of the morning belonged to Mark English, who produced a stunning finish to win the second semi final of the men’s 800m in a championship record of 1:43.49.
English positioned himself well throughout the race but appeared to be boxed in as the field came off the final bend. With his route to the front narrowing, the Donegal athlete remained patient before finding an opening on the home straight.
He surged through the gap and powered across the line to claim victory, breaking the previous championship record and laying down a major marker ahead of Thursday night’s final.
After the disappointment of missing the final at the 2024 European Championships in Rome, English now returns to the European stage as a genuine medal contender.
Roy Reaches 200m Semi Finals
Lauren Roy began her day in the opening heat of the women’s 200m, where the Fast Twitch AC athlete produced a strong performance to finish fourth in 23.20.
Despite missing out on an automatic top 2 qualification place, Roy recorded the sixth fastest time across all three heats, comfortably securing her progression to the evening’s semi finals.
She returned to the track for the second semi final, again finishing fourth in 23.20. It was another solid performance, but the time left her four places outside the final qualifiers.
Roy’s championships are not over, however, with the Fast Twitch AC athlete set to return as part of Ireland’s 4x100m relay team on Saturday.
Adeleke Announces Her Return With Superb Victory
The story of the evening belonged to Rhasidat Adeleke, who marked her eagerly awaited return to international competition with a commanding victory in the third semi final of the women’s 200m.
Adeleke stormed out of the blocks and attacked the bend with real authority, quickly establishing herself at the front of the race.
Fabienne Hoenke and Success Eduan applied pressure down the home straight, but Adeleke held them off to claim victory in a season’s best of 22.43 and book her place in Thursday evening’s final.
Her time was the second fastest recorded across the three semi finals, firmly placing the Tallaght AC athlete among the leading medal contenders.
It was a superb way for Adeleke to announce her return to the international stage in an Irish vest. After doubts over her participation in Birmingham, she is now one race away from a European medal.
Tuthill Takes Excellent Fifth in Hammer Final
Nicola Tuthill rounded out Ireland’s evening campaign with an excellent fifth place in the women’s hammer throw final.
The 22 year old Cork athlete produced a best throw of 70.33m to secure a place among Europe’s leading throwers and complete another impressive major championship campaign.
Tuthill may have missed out on the medals this time, but fifth place at a European Championship represents another major step forward. With so much of her career still ahead of her, bigger days in an Irish vest could be on the way.
