The opening meeting of the Diamond League season in Doha has been postponed, with organisers confirming a new date of June 19th amid ongoing instability in the region.
Originally scheduled for May 8th, the meet has been pushed back by over a month, with the possibility still there that it could be moved again if the situation does not improve.
The decision does not come as a major shock. Travel disruption across the region and wider safety concerns have made staging a global event increasingly difficult. Qatar, in particular, has felt the effects of the conflict more than most, and the knock-on impact on logistics and security has been hard to ignore.
With Doha now delayed, the opening meeting of the 2026 Diamond League season will instead take place in Keqiao, China, on May 16th.
There has also been a venue change for the rescheduled Doha meet, shifting from the Qatar Sports Club to the Khalifa International Stadium.
The new June date does raise questions around conditions, particularly the heat. Competing in Doha at that time of year is far from ideal, and it remains to be seen what measures will be put in place to manage temperatures and ensure athlete safety.
As it stands, the rescheduled meeting will slot in between Oslo on June 10th and Paris on June 28th, making it the eighth stop on this summer’s Diamond League circuit.
For now, organisers are pressing ahead with the revised plan, while keeping one eye on developments in the region.
“The series and meeting organisers remain committed to delivering the highest level of safe and secure competition for athletes, media and spectators,” they said in a statement released yesterday.
