The curtain comes down on the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham on Sunday, but Ireland’s campaign is far from finished.
Saturday delivered another unforgettable chapter as Kate O’Connor claimed heptathlon gold following seven superb events, while Andrew Coscoran produced a brilliant run to secure bronze in the men’s 1500m final. Their medals took Ireland’s tally to four, matching the country’s best return from a European Athletics Championships.
There are six more Irish athletes preparing to compete on the final day, beginning with the marathon events on Sunday morning.
Fionnuala McCormack will lead the Irish challenge in the women’s marathon at 7.30am. One of the great servants of Irish athletics, McCormack will once again carry Irish hopes over 26.2 miles on the championship stage.
Paul O’Donnell, Ryan Creech and David McGlynn will then take to the streets of Birmingham for the men’s marathon at 8.10am. With four Irish athletes tackling the distance across the two races, there will be plenty to keep an eye on throughout the morning.
The final Irish involvement of the championships arrives at 9.13pm, when Sarah Healy and Sophie O’Sullivan contest the women’s 1500m final.
Healy advanced after finishing second in her heat, while O’Sullivan booked her place by finishing fifth. Both will now line up against a quality field with medals on the line.
One more Irish medal would take the final tally to five, setting a new record for the European Athletics Championships. After everything we have witnessed this week, you would be brave to rule out one last piece of Irish history.
