How to Watch Tonight's Lausanne Diamond League

How to Watch Tonight's Lausanne Diamond League

No Irish athlete will compete at tonight’s Lausanne Diamond League, but the meeting carries more Irish interest than the start list initially suggests.

Amy Hunt returns to the 200m just eight days after edging Rhasidat Adeleke to European gold in Birmingham, while the men’s 800m could influence the World Athletics Ultimate Championship qualification positions of Mark English and Cian McPhillips.

What Could Lausanne Mean for Ireland’s Ultimate Athletics Championships Hopes?

Rhasidat Adeleke currently sits 23rd in the women’s 200m standings, with 16 places available for the World Athletics Ultimate Championship. Léonie Pointet is the only Lausanne entrant ranked below Adeleke, although she is 42nd in the current world rankings and would need an exceptional result to become an immediate threat. Swiss athlete Fabienne Hoenke, ranked 17th, is already ahead of Adeleke and could make the route to Budapest more difficult by improving her score. There is no 1500m in Lausanne, so Andrew Coscoran’s position of 10th from a quota of 12 cannot be affected tonight.

The men’s 800m has greater potential to influence the Irish picture. Mark English is sixth and Cian McPhillips is 10th, with 16 athletes invited. Lausanne entrants Marino Bloudek and Francesco Pernici are both ranked 19th in the world, while David Barroso is 25th. A major result from any of them could move them closer to McPhillips, although English has a considerably stronger cushion near the top of the standings.

Other Events to Watch

The women’s 800m at 8.32pm brings together Swiss favourite and European champion Audrey Werro with world champion Lilian Odira.

Letsile Tebogo and Zharnel Hughes headline the men’s 200m at 8.41pm, while Olympic champion Masai Russell and European champion Nadine Visser meet in the women’s 100m hurdles.
