Ireland appear set to miss out on the opportunity to defend their European mixed 4x400 metres relay title after slipping outside the qualification places for next month's European Athletics Championships in Birmingham.
With just 12 days remaining before the qualification window closes on 26th July, Ireland currently sit ninth in the Road to Birmingham standings, one place outside the eight teams that will contest the mixed relay at Alexander Stadium.
Great Britain have already secured their place automatically as hosts, while Poland, Italy, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, France and Norway currently occupy the remaining qualification positions through the European relay rankings. Ireland's accumulated qualifying time of 6:24.61 leaves them 0.78 seconds adrift of Norway's final qualifying mark of 6:23.83.
The qualification system is based on each nation's two fastest mixed 4x400 metres relay performances recorded during the qualification period, which concludes on 26th July.
While Ireland remain mathematically capable of climbing back into the qualification places, time is rapidly running out.
Unlike individual events, mixed 4x400 metre relays are contested only sparingly throughout the season, with very few opportunities remaining for nations to record faster qualifying performances before the window closes. No mixed relay races currently feature on the remaining World Athletics Continental Tour schedule, leaving Ireland's hopes of qualifying appearing increasingly remote.
Unless another qualifying opportunity emerges before 26th July, Ireland look set to miss out on Birmingham and with it the chance to defend the European title they won so memorably in Rome two years ago.
That victory remains one of the standout moments in Irish athletics history. Christopher O'Donnell, Rhasidat Adeleke, Thomas Barr and Sharlene Mawdsley combined to claim gold in the inaugural European mixed 4x400 metres relay, finishing ahead of Italy and the Netherlands in one of the country's greatest relay performances.
The qualification picture will not become official until the window closes on 26th July, but with fewer than two weeks remaining and Ireland sitting outside the qualification places, a return to defend their European crown now appears increasingly unlikely.
