Irish Talent Scattered Coast To Coast Across U.S. Collegiate Meets This Weekend

The U.S. collegiate outdoor season rolls on again this weekend with Irish athletes once again spread right across the country and stepping into a wide mix of events.

From middle distance battles on the East Coast to sprint work in Texas and field action in Illinois, there’s no shortage of racing opportunities as the season begins to take shape.

Here’s what’s on deck this week.

Illini Deca-Jam
Champaign, Illinois | Friday April 11th

At the Illini Deca-Jam, Siún Quinn is set for high jump duty on home turf with the University of Illinois, continuing her early-season field campaign.

College Station, Texas | Wednesday April 9th – Friday April 11th

Out in Texas, Susie Nestor steps down in distance to contest the 800m while representing Rice University.

Meanwhile, the University of Houston’s Sean Aigboboh continues his busy sprint schedule ahead, doubling up in both the 100m and 200m.

UW-Platteville Invitational
Platteville, Wisconsin | Thursday April 10th – Friday April 11th

Cillian Gleeson lines up over 5000m, competing for the University of Wisconsin.

Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania | Thursday April 9th – Friday April 10th

Laura McConville takes on the 10000m, competing for Mount St. Marys.

Friar Invitational
Providence, Rhode Island | Friday April 10th

A strong Irish presence builds across the start lists here, driven largely by depth in the middle distance events.

That depth is anchored by Providence College, with Maeve O’Neill and Gemma Galvin both lining up in a competitive 800m field, where Emmy Thornton of Dartmouth adds further Irish interest.

Providence’s influence doesn’t stop there. Jane Buckley steps up for 5000m duties, while Cormac Dixon takes on the 3000m, joined in that event by Iona’s Muireann Duffy.

The 800m fields, in particular, continue to fill out with Irish names, as Conall Rogers of Northeastern University and Holy Cross athlete Liam Lyons further strengthen the lineup.

There’s also Irish representation across the mile, with Iona’s Scott Fagan set to compete alongside Cara Laverty in Providence colours and Grace Weigele of Stony Brook.

And to round things off, Providence once again features through Anna Gardiner, who is also scheduled for 5000m action.

Duke Invitational
Durham, North Carolina | Friday April 10th – Saturday April 11th

The Duke Invitational sees a strong mix of Irish distance runners across multiple events.

Seán Donoghue, racing for the Villanova, and La Salle’s Seán Cronin both take on the 1500m, with Claire Crowley lining out for Boston College in the 

Emer McGlynn, in action for Catawba College, also lines up over 1500m.

Jack Fenlon also represents Villanova in the 5000m.

Athens, Georgia | Friday April 10th – Saturday April 11th

David Davitt is set for relay action with the University of Pennsylvania, competing as part of their 4x400m team.

Roisin Treacy, representing Loyola University Chicago, lines up in the 1500m.

Jo-Lauren Keane lines up over 1500m, representing University of Mississippi.

Sarah Hosey is in action over 800m, representing the University of Tulsa as she continues her outdoor season campaign.

Daire Mahon is set for high jump action, competing for Harvard.

With Irish athletes competing across sprints, middle distance, long distance, and field events, this weekend once again gives a clear sense of the depth and spread of talent across the U.S. collegiate system. From smaller invitationals to major meets, there are opportunities everywhere, and plenty of chances for strong early-season performances to start taking shape.
