In the modern lexicon of Irish middle distance running, there is a very particular type of theatre reserved exclusively for Mark English. It is a high wire act that routinely defies both the geometry of the track and the collective blood pressure of those watching from afar.
On a warm evening at the Diamond League in Shanghai today, the 33 year old Donegal doctor didn't just open his outdoor season, he produced a masterpiece of tactical patience, surging to a last gasp victory in the men’s 800 metres.
Crossing the line in a magnificent meeting record of 1:43.85, English secured only the second Diamond League victory of his storied career, not far off seven years after his memorable triumph in Birmingham in 2019. The win also came with a sizeable financial reward, with first place at Diamond League level carrying a $20,000 payday.
For the opening 700 metres, however, a podium finish felt like an abstraction. Tucked away on the inside as the pacemakers dragged a high calibre field through a punishing first lap, English found himself swamped as the real racing began.
Coming off the final bend and turning into the home straight, the Finn Valley AC athlete looked hopelessly boxed in, languishing in seventh place. Up ahead, Australia’s Luke Boyes and the American Brandon Miller had broken clear, appearing destined to fight out the minor honours between themselves.
But it was here that English conjured what has become his unmistakable, physics defying trademark.
As the lactic acid began to freeze the strides of those ahead, the Justin Rinaldi coached athlete found an extra gear, slicing through the fading field with remarkable composure. Swapping his rhythmic stride for a desperate, lunging sprint, he caught the leaders in the final ten metres, throwing his torso across the line in a frantic photo finish.
The stadium clock confirmed the narrowest of margins, with English just shading Botswana’s Kethobogile Haingura to claim victory.
While a 1:43.85 opener may not shake the absolute foundations of world running, English's season opener is a huge statement of intent as he builds towards Birmingham later in the summer.
