Kate O’Connor will enter tonight’s 800m in pole position for European heptathlon gold after moving from third to first during a superb morning in Birmingham. Both Irish 4x100m relay teams also reached their respective finals, while Sarah Healy and Sophie O'Sullivan
Kenny Claims Excellent Sixth in Half Marathon Race Walk
David Kenny produced a brilliant performance to finish sixth in the men’s half marathon race walk.
The Farranfore Maine Valley athlete remained within reach of the medal places throughout the race before crossing the line in a personal best of 1:24:49.
Kenny finished around one minute outside the podium positions, a narrow margin across the demanding distance.
It was an excellent European Championship performance from Kenny, who remained competitive against some of the continent’s leading race walkers from start to finish.
Lane Records Personal Best in 11th
Oisín Lane completed a strong Irish showing by finishing 11th in a personal best of 1:27:09.
The Westmeath athlete produced a controlled performance across the half marathon distance, maintaining his rhythm before finishing just over two minutes behind Kenny.
Recording a personal best on the European stage represents a major step forward for Lane, with both Irish athletes securing places inside the top 11.
O’Connor Leads Heptathlon With One Event Remaining
Kate O’Connor began the morning in third place after completing the opening four events of the heptathlon on Friday.
Her first event on Saturday was the long jump, where the Dundalk St Gerard’s AC athlete produced one of the biggest performances of her competition.
O’Connor recorded a personal best of 6.55m, finishing third in the event and collecting a huge 1,023 points.
That moved her onto 4,949 points, leaving her only six points behind leader Annik Kälin and five behind Sofie Dokter after five events.
The javelin has long been one of O’Connor’s best disciplines, and it provided her opportunity to take control of the competition.
She delivered a best throw of 50.16m, again finishing third in the event and adding another 863 points to her total.
That performance moved O’Connor into the overall lead on 5,812 points with only the 800m remaining.
The Irish athlete holds a 51 point advantage over Emma Oosterwegel, who sits second on 5,761, while Sofie Dokter is third on 5,741.
O’Connor will now carry that advantage into tonight’s decisive 800m at 7.45pm. The margins remain tight, but the European title is firmly within her grasp after six events.
McCann’s 1500m Campaign Comes to an End
Jodie McCann’s European Championship campaign came to an end in the opening round of the women’s 1500m.
The Dublin athlete finished 13th in her heat in 4:14.63, leaving her outside the places required to advance.
It was not the result McCann wanted, but the race provided further championship experience against a high quality European field.
Healy and O’Sullivan Book Final Places
Ireland will have two athletes in tomorrow evening’s women’s 1500m final after Sarah Healy and Sophie O’Sullivan safely advanced from the second heat.
Healy remained composed throughout, positioning herself among the automatic qualification places before crossing the line second in 4:08.12.
O’Sullivan followed closely behind, producing a smart performance to finish fifth in 4:08.88 and claim another automatic place.
Both athletes will return for tomorrow night’s final as contenders, giving Ireland a major presence in the European decider.
Irish Women Smash National 4x100m Record
Lucy May Sleeman, Ciara Neville, Sarah Leahy and Lauren Roy produced a huge performance in the opening round of the women’s 4x100m relay.
The Irish quartet finished fourth in their heat in a new national record of 43.13, comfortably improving the previous Irish mark.
Their time secured Ireland’s place in the European final, completing a major achievement for a squad that has continued to make significant progress.
The four athletes will return later tonight with another opportunity to lower the record and challenge Europe’s leading relay nations.
Men’s Relay Team Books Final Place
Ireland’s men completed a memorable morning for the sprint relay squads by also qualifying for the 4x100m final.
Bori Akinola, Sean Aigboboh, Marcus Lawler and Israel Olatunde finished fourth in their heat with a season’s best of 39.13.
The quartet safely secured its place in the final, meaning Ireland will be represented in both 4x100m medal races later tonight.
Looking Ahead to This Evening
After a superb morning for Irish athletics, attention now turns to Kate O’Connor’s bid for European heptathlon gold. The Dundalk athlete carries a 51 point lead into the decisive 800m at 7.45pm, with the entire competition set to be settled over two laps.
Jack O’Leary will compete in the men’s 10,000m final before Andrew Coscoran takes his place in the men’s 1500m final. Both Irish 4x100m teams will also return after booking their places in the medal races earlier today, with the women carrying fresh confidence following their national record of 43.13.
With O’Connor leading the heptathlon and four more European finals featuring Irish athletes, another huge evening awaits in Birmingham.
