There are plenty of sound reasons to enter a race. A good course, a useful distance and the chance to run somewhere new will usually do the job.
Being handed a bobble hat after running through a forest is also a fairly persuasive argument.
The Gingerbread Run returns to Donadea Forest Park in County Kildare on Saturday November 7th, bringing three separate 10K races to the woodland trails. Demand has already been strong. The 9.30am and 11.30am races are sold out, leaving the 1.30pm start as the final available option.
The booking page remains live at the time of writing, but the organiser has warned that fewer than 50 places are left. This is an event that has sold out in each of the past three years, so leaving the decision until race week would be optimistic in the extreme.
Three Races In One Day
The format is one of the most interesting parts of the event. Instead of sending one very large field around the forest, Pop Up Races will stage three complete 10K races at 9.30am, 11.30am and 1.30pm.
That gives every group its own start, finish and race atmosphere while reducing congestion on the woodland paths. It also means the forest will have runners arriving, racing and collecting their medals for much of the day.
The first two starts filling several weeks in advance says plenty about the event's popularity. The 1.30pm race is now the only route onto the start line, and it may actually be the most civilised option of the lot. There is no dawn alarm, no breakfast eaten while barely conscious and no need to scrape ice from the car at an hour when sensible people are still in bed.
Two Laps Through Donadea Forest
Published course information describes a 5K woodland loop completed twice. The route uses mixed trails and forest tracks around Donadea, passing near the lake and the remains of the old castle before returning to the central start and finish area.
The listed course profile contains roughly 47 metres of climbing across the full 10K. This is not a mountain race, but it will not feel exactly like a flat road event either. The surface, gentle rises and repeated changes in direction will ask runners to pay attention to their footing and manage their effort.
The two lap format should help with pacing. Runners get one full look at the route before tackling it again, removing most of the surprises from the second half. The danger, of course, is charging around the opening lap because the forest feels quick and pleasant, then meeting every small rise again with considerably less enthusiasm.
Trail shoes may be useful if the weeks before the race are particularly wet, though the best choice will depend on the final conditions and the runner's own preference. The sensible move is to watch the forecast and avoid arriving with footwear that has never touched a forest path before.
A Setting With Plenty Of Character
Donadea Forest Park covers 243 hectares of mixed woodland and occupies the former estate of the Aylmer family. The remains of Donadea Castle, old walled gardens, St Peter's Church, an ice house, a boat house and the nineteenth century Lime Tree Avenue all sit within the grounds.
The park also contains a memorial to New York firefighters who died on September 11th. The limestone monument was inspired by Sean Tallon, a firefighter whose family came from Donadea.
For runners, the combination of forest roads, broadleaf woodland, streams and the lake makes it a very different setting from the usual town centre 10K. Early November should bring plenty of autumn colour, though an Irish forecast always retains the right to replace colour with rain at short notice.
Donadea already has a strong association with running, hosting regular races and training on its familiar woodland loops. The Gingerbread Run takes that practical running venue and adds enough personality to make the occasion feel like more than another timed 10K.
The All Important Bobble Hat
Every participant is due to receive a Gingerbread Run bobble hat, a finisher's medal and other event goodies. It is a simple idea, but it gives the race an identity that runners remember long after another standard technical top has disappeared into the back of a drawer.
The bobble hat is particularly well judged for a November event. It is useful, easy to spot and likely to appear at parkruns across the country for the rest of the winter. The medal supplies the usual evidence that the 10K happened, while the hat may do more actual work afterwards.
The standard entry price is €29.95, with a booking fee of €2.10 bringing the online total to €32.05. The organiser states that refunds will not be available after October 21st and deferrals are not offered, so entrants should be confident they can attend before booking.
A Race For Fast Runners And First Timers
The course should appeal to several types of runner. Club athletes can race the loop hard and use the changing surface as an autumn test. Regular road runners can try a forest event without committing to steep mountain terrain. Newer runners who have built up to 10K can enjoy a closed woodland setting with a clear two lap structure.
The main adjustment for anyone coming from the road is pace. Forest tracks do not always reward staring at the watch every few seconds. A controlled effort and attention to the ground will usually produce a better day than fighting for identical kilometre splits from start to finish.
The later start also makes the event practical for runners travelling from farther away. Donadea is around eight kilometres south of Kilcock and thirteen kilometres north of Naas. Coillte lists 460 parking spaces at the forest park and operates a cashless €5 parking charge, though participants should follow any separate event day instructions issued by the organiser.
