Running has a habit of turning a simple activity into a growing shopping list. A watch, a waterproof jacket, a pair for racing and another for training. Eventually, even taking it handy seems to require its own equipment.
Enter the ASICS Gel Slowcush.
Launched globally on October 1st, the shoe is designed for easy runs, recovery miles and sessions where pace takes a back seat. ASICS has built its pitch around a softer, more comfortable running experience.
It costs €210 in Ireland and £185 in the UK. At that price, the obvious question is what it offers that your existing trainers do not.
What Is the Gel Slowcush?
ASICS positions the Gel Slowcush as a new model focused on comfort during relaxed running.
Its main ingredients are FF Luxe Plus foam and PureGEL Plus cushioning, supported by an engineered mesh upper and a padded knit tongue. The intention, according to the brand, is to provide soft landings and a comfortable fit.
That gives the shoe a straightforward purpose. It is aimed at the outings where you want to settle into a gentle rhythm without spending the entire run checking your watch.
There is an appealing idea in that. Plenty of runners enjoy the ordinary miles between races, and comfort is a perfectly reasonable priority when buying footwear.
The question is how much you need to spend to find it.
What Is Different About the Cushioning?
The product description contains two similar sounding names that refer to different parts of the cushioning system.
FF Luxe Plus is the foam, which ASICS says offers more bounce than its FF Luxe material. PureGEL Plus is its updated cushioning technology, designed to improve impact absorption.
ASICS says PureGEL Plus is approximately 20% lighter than PureGEL. That comparison concerns the cushioning technology, rather than the weight of the whole shoe.
These are design claims, not a verdict from Run Republic. We have not tested the Gel Slowcush, so we cannot yet judge how its softness translates into comfort over a full run.
For a future review, the useful questions would include how secure the foot feels, how the shoe handles corners and wet surfaces, and how comfortable it remains after several miles.
Does a Recovery Run Need a Separate Shoe?
Buying a dedicated pair is a choice, rather than an automatic requirement of having easy runs in your schedule.
If your existing trainers fit well and already feel comfortable at a relaxed pace, the Gel Slowcush needs to offer a noticeable benefit to justify another purchase. A new category name alone does not make your current pair unsuitable.
The distinction between a shoe intended for recovery runs and a product proven to improve recovery also matters. The information reviewed for this preview does not establish that wearing the Gel Slowcush will help runners recover faster.
Its clearest proposition is comfort. That is something buyers can assess against their own preferences without treating the shoe as a shortcut through the days after a hard race.
Who Might Consider It?
The strongest potential audience is a runner who prefers a soft feel underfoot and wants to prioritise that during easy mileage.
It could also interest someone whose current shoes feel uncomfortable at slower paces, although trying it on and comparing it with other options would be more useful than choosing from the product description alone.
At €210, it deserves that comparison. A specialist running shop visit is an opportunity to assess the fit and feel alongside your usual trainers, rather than assuming that the most cushioned sounding option will suit you best.
The Verdict for Now
The Gel Slowcush has a clear purpose and a substantial price tag. Its emphasis on relaxed running may appeal to people who are happy to leave the stopwatch alone for an evening.
However, the answer to the question in the headline is no: an easy run does not automatically require another pair of shoes.
If the Gel Slowcush feels noticeably better for the running you actually do, it may earn its cost. If your current trainers already do the job comfortably, taking it handy remains available at no extra charge.
