Andrew Coscoran is back under the lights of the Diamond League tonight, lining up in Brussels for his first appearance on the circuit since Oslo last summer. Back then he finished tenth in a stacked 1500 metres won by Jakob Ingebrigtsen. A lot has changed since.
Indoors, back in February, he tore up the record books, lowering the Irish marks for the mile, 1500 metres, and 3000 metres, while also reaching the finals of both the European and World Indoor Championships over 3000 metres. The highlight came at the Millrose Games in New York, where his 3:49.26 in the famed Wanamaker Mile booked his World Championships 1500 metres spot.
Outdoors, he opened with a statement victory at Grand Slam Track in Miami over 3000 metres, beating the likes of Grant Fisher and George Mills. A few weeks later he added the World Championships B standard in the 5000 metres with a 13:11.05 performance in Los Angeles. After winning the Morton Mile in July, he delivered a thriller at the Irish Nationals, toppling defending champion Brian Fay to take the 5000 metres before returning just two hours later to claim silver in the 1500 metres behind Cathal Doyle.
It has been a strong response after what many felt was a disappointing Olympic campaign last summer. The Dubliner has found his rhythm again, and tonight in Brussels he meets serious company in Abel Kipsang of Kenya and Portugal’s Isaac Nader. It should give a clear picture of where Coscoran stands amongst the world’s best as the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo approach.
