How To Watch Irish Athletes In Action Across Europe Today

Another busy day of international athletics action lies ahead for Irish athletes today, with competitors spread across Spain, Belgium, and Germany across club competition and Continental Tour meetings.

Dundrum South Dublin AC return for the second and final day of the European Champion Clubs Cup in Castellón, with the Irish club continuing to battle hard against some of Europe’s strongest domestic teams. While podium contention is realistically out of reach at this stage in both the men’s and women’s standings, Dundrum have continued to compete with real determination throughout the weekend and still have a packed programme of events remaining today.

Over in Belgium, Sharlene Mawdsley returns to the track at the IFAM Outdoor after an excellent 400m victory and PB yesterday. The Tipperary athlete is currently still listed for the women’s 200m this evening, although IFAM start lists are notoriously provisional and subject to late withdrawals and changes. A number of Irish athletes listed yesterday ultimately did not race. Jodie McCann is another athlete currently appearing on multiple start lists today, both in Belgium and Germany, so anyone hoping to follow the Irish athletes live should keep a close eye on the updated start lists closer to race time.

Germany’s Pfingstsportfest Rehlingen also features several established Irish internationals. Laura Nicholson continues what has already been an unusually long outdoor campaign by European standards, having opened her season back in January while competing in the Southern Hemisphere. The Bandon AC athlete picked up an impressive win in New Zealand earlier this year and has also recorded another victory in Japan since then. Sunday marks her first outdoor race of the season on this side of the world and she will be hoping to make an immediate impact in Europe.

Eimear Maher is also set for her outdoor season debut. The European U23 bronze medallist enjoyed a solid indoor campaign earlier this year, including a runner up finish at a meeting in Spain, and will now look to lay down an early marker heading into the main summer championship season.
