Irish Stars Face Olympic And World Champions As Oslo Diamond League Startlists Revealed

Irish middle-distance running takes center stage in Norway this week as a formidable contingent prepares to spearhead the Irish charge at the prestigious Bislett Games in Oslo. Fresh off a strong sequence of early-season performances, Donegal’s Mark English and Dublin’s Andrew Coscoran lead the line in their respective Diamond League events, while para sprinting powerhouse Orla Comerford returns to defend her crown in the para 100m event.
English Eyes Red-Hot Elite 800m Battle
Mark English is enjoying a strong opening stretch to his outdoor seasson. The Finn Valley AC athlete has been in red-hot form, stamping his authority on the world stage before the summer has even fully kicked into gear.
English opened his Diamond League campaign with a historic victory in Shanghai, becoming the first Irish male athlete to top the podium in the elite series. Following a more challenging night in Rabat he unleashed a stunning performance in Rome last Thursday. Pushing through the field with a trademark late surge, English finished a razor-thin second (1:43.80) to France’s Gabriel Tual (1:43.66). The time registered as the second-fastest of English's career, tearing down his own Ulster and Donegal records in the process.
The task in Oslo, however, is a monumental one. The 800m start list is a heavily stacked, world-class field featuring absolute titans of the distance:
- Emmanuel Wanyonyi (KEN): The World Number 1 and reigning world champion from Tkyo enters with a blisteringly fast Personal Best of 1:41.11.
- Marco Arop (CAN): The Canadian front-runner sits at World Number 6 with a terrifying lifetime best of 1:41.20.
- Gabriel Tual (FRA): English will be eager for immediate revenge against the French European champion who narrowly pipped him at the line in Rome.
With English sitting comfortably at a season's best of 1:43.80, he is firmly in the conversation to disrupt the global elite in Norway.
Coscoran Tackles the Iconic "Dream Mile"
In the night's showpiece distance event, Star of the Sea AC’s Andrew Coscoran steps onto the track for the legendary Dream Mile. This marks Coscoran’s second outdoor Diamond League outing of the season following a highly encouraging opener in Rabat, where he registered a swift 3:31.65 over 1500m to signal his elite fitness.
Coscoran, the reigning Irish outdoor 1500m record holder (3:30.42) and indoor mile record holder (3:49.26), brings a lifetime outdoor mile best of 3:50.49 to Oslo. He faces a deep field where tactics and positioning will be paramount.
The Primary Threats:
- Yared Nuguse (USA): The Olympic bronze medalist and World Number 4 is arguably the most dangerous finisher in the field, boasting a devastating 3:43.97 personal best.
- Isaac Nader (POR): The current World Number 1 and 1500m Olympic champion arrives in sensational form after securing a breakthrough victory in a Portuguese record of 3:48.25.
- The Kenyan Duo: Reynold Cheruiyot (PB 3:47.46) and Timothy Cheruiyot (PB 3:47.71) present formidable tactical challenges at the front of the pack.
Comerford Looks to Double Down in Para 100m
Outside of the official Diamond League point-scoring events, Irish interest remains high in the non-Diamond League invitational program.
The women's Para 100m features an Irish double-threat, spearheaded by reigning World Para Athletics T13 100m and 200m champion Orla Comerford. The Raheny Shamrock sprinter, who captured a T13 100m bronze medal at the Paris Paralympics in 2024, returns to Oslo as the defending champion after storming to victory at the Bislett Games last year in a scorching personal best of 11.87 seconds.
Comerford will be joined on the blocks by fellow Irish international star Lana Sutton, adding serious depth to the Irish sprint contingent. With Comerford arriving in Oslo carrying the prestige of her double-world titles from New Delhi, Irish eyes will be fixed on the clock as she looks to replicate last year's win in the event.
TV Coverage
English is scheduled to take to the track in the men's 800m at 7:20pm Irish time, with Coscoran following in the prestigious Dream Mile at 8:19pm. Comerford and Sutton are due on the track for the non-televised women's Para 100m at 6:26pm. Coverage of the Bislett Games will be available live on Virgin Media Two in Ireland and BBC Three in the UK both from 7:00pm to 9.00pm.
With English carrying some of the best form of his career, Coscoran lining up in one of athletics' most iconic races, Irish athletics fans will have no shortage of reasons to tune in when the Diamond League rolls into Oslo on Wednesday evening.
