Becky Carter and Amy Louise Jeffers: Dynamic Duo Launches 'Solemates' Running Group, Inspiring Fitness and Friendship in Wexford

September 10, 2024

Moving to a new county and starting a new job as a vet would be a daunting task for most people. However, Wexford woman Becky Carter took it all in stride and added another challenge to her plate—training for the Galway City Marathon while launching a brand-new social running initiative, Solemates, in Wexford Town.

Becky reached out to her cousin Amy Louise Jeffers to ask if there was already a social running group in Wexford. When she found out there wasn't, the two decided to take the plunge and start their own. They aimed to create a welcoming social running group for beginners and those looking to improve their fitness, with a strong emphasis on the social aspect—making new friends, enjoying post-run coffees and even taking the occasional dip at Ballinesker Beach after their runs. Hence the outstanding choice of name for the group: sole obviously refers to peoples’ feet but is also a pun of soul while mates refers to social element of the group.

Having experienced the power of social running groups while studying in Dublin and working in Tipperary, Becky knew first-hand the benefits of having a supportive “tribe” of people working towards individual goals. The results so far have left both women "absolutely buzzing". Becky proudly shares, “People who have never run 5km before are absolutely smashing it,” and the participants are “delighted with life”. The group has fostered a joyful, encouraging atmosphere and everyone feels "happy out" during their weekly Wednesday evening meet-ups.

Amy Louise, a personal health and fitness coach at Barbelle Health in Piercestown, is equally passionate about the group's success. She loves “seeing people thrive, step out of their comfort zones and achieve things they never thought possible with the right support”. Reflecting on her own experience, Amy Louise says, “When I started running, I had no advice and relied on everything I read online, but none of it was personalised. I didn’t have anyone to ask questions.” Teaming up with Becky transformed her running experience, making it much more enjoyable.

Safety is also a priority for the pair. Running alone doesn’t always feel comfortable, but being part of a group allows participants to enjoy beautiful routes, like Curracloe Beach and the nearby Raven Forest, in a safe and supportive environment. Many in the group have shared that the organised structure and camaraderie help keep them accountable and running has now become a regular and enjoyable part of their routine.

Having had the privilege of joining the group on a few occasions, it’s clear that everyone is made to feel incredibly welcome. Becky and Amy Louise’s infectious enthusiasm will help you hit your running goals—no matter how big or small. Wednesday evenings and the occasional Sunday morning run will soon become a highlight of your week. The tagline on their Instagram account perfectly captures the spirit of the group: "Mates at every pace", making Solemates a fantastic way to make new friends in a fun, safe and supportive environment.
