This Sunday marks an exciting day for mountain runners as IMRA Munster racing returns with two highly anticipated races: the Galtymore and the Cush-Galtees. These races promise challenging terrains and intense competition, attracting top athletes from across the country.
The headline event, the Galtymore race, is not just another challenge on the calendar—it's the final race of the Irish Championship and the penultimate race in the Munster Championships. This 13km race is a true test of endurance and skill, with a staggering 1300 metres of elevation. Runners will tackle open mountain terrain, ascending to the peak of Galtymore before making their way back over the peaks of Galtybeg and Cush.
This year’s Irish Championship has seen thrillingly close competition. The women’s title race will be decided on Sunday, with Esther Dickson and Becky Quinn vying for the top spot. Both athletes have demonstrated exceptional performances throughout the season, and the Galtymore race will be the ultimate decider. On the men's side, Sean Quirke currently leads the standings, with Matthew McConnell on his heels. Quirke will need to deliver a strong performance to secure his place at the top of the league.
The Galtymore race kicks off at 12pm, setting the stage for a dramatic conclusion to the Irish Championship.
Shortly after, at 12:15pm, the Cush-Galtees race will commence. Although shorter at 4.5km with 400m of elevation, it remains demanding for the runners who will tackle it. The race begins with a rocky trail leading to open mountain terrain, where runners will push towards the summit of Cush. After reaching the summit and checking in with the summit marshal, participants will turn around and retrace their steps to the finish line.
Both races are under the experienced guidance of Race Director Vivian O’Gorman, who ensures that all aspects of the event run smoothly.
With high stakes, challenging courses, and top athletes, this Sunday’s races are set to be a highlight of the mountain running season.
