The Sligo Women's Trail Series, organised by Race Director Theresa Kilgannon, is set to conclude its exhilarating journey at Union Wood this weekend on Sunday, the 28th of April. Building upon the success of two previous events, this final instalment promises to be a celebration of female empowerment amidst the stunning trails of Sligo.
Kilgannon, speaking to Run Republic, expressed the excitement for this concluding event, noting the fantastic feedback received thus far. She warmly invites women of all backgrounds to join in for a day of exploration and joy in the embrace of Union Wood's natural beauty.
The event, scheduled to commence at 10 am, encourages participants to sign in between 9 am and 9:50 am, ensuring a smooth start to the trail adventure. Unlike traditional races, the focus here is on pure enjoyment and immersion in nature, free from timing pressures.
The route itself weaves through Union Wood's gravel trails and fire roads, leading into enchanting wooded areas. As participants traverse old mountain bike trails and winding single tracks, they encounter challenges in the form of tree roots, rocks, and mud, all amidst a backdrop of serene bluebells and sunlight filtering through the canopy.
One of the highlights of this 6km route is its inclusion as the short course for the upcoming IMRA West League on May 11th. This seamless transition from the Women's Trail Series to a larger league emphasises the event's goal of fostering confidence and skill among participants, encouraging them to continue their mountain-running journey beyond this series.
The allure of Union Wood's forest trails, with its natural obstacles and scenic beauty, promises a captivating experience that not only tests physical abilities but also nourishes the spirit. Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnerships and IMRA’s vision for this pilot series of creating a space where women can connect with nature, challenge themselves, and find joy in the trails has resonated strongly, making this final instalment a fitting culmination to a series dedicated to health, happiness, and empowerment.
For those eager to embark on this journey of discovery and fitness, registration is open, beckoning women to come together in a shared adventure through Union Wood's enchanting landscapes.
