Cathal Doyle May Have Broken 51 Year Irish Road Mile Record as Irish Quartet Race in Düsseldorf Yesterday

Cathal Doyle may have broken a 51 year Irish road mile record after clocking 3:55.33 at the New Balance Kö Meile in Düsseldorf on Sunday.

The Clonliffe Harriers athlete finished fifth in a high quality elite mile won by American Marco Langon in 3:52.83. Doyle crossed the line only two and a half seconds behind the winner, having remained among the leading group throughout the race.

However, it is the comparison with a performance recorded more than half a century ago that makes Doyle’s result particularly significant.

Clonliffe Harriers drew attention to a 3:57.8 road mile run by Irish athletics great Eamonn Coghlan in London on July 4th, 1975. Based on those two performances, Doyle ran 2.47 seconds faster than the previous recorded Irish best.

The complication is that the road mile does not appear as a clearly established senior category within Athletics Ireland’s published national record material. Doyle’s performance has not yet been officially confirmed as an Irish record, with Clonliffe also stating that ratification is required.

For now, the fairest description is that Doyle has produced the fastest known Irish road mile. If the necessary conditions are met and Athletics Ireland formally accepts the performance, it could become a recognised national record.

World Athletics only began formally recognising road mile world records in 2023. That relatively recent change helps explain why national historical lists for the event are not always as straightforward as those covering established track distances.

Doyle Finds Timely Form Before Copenhagen

The performance arrives less than two weeks before Doyle represents Ireland in the road mile at the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen.

He had already recorded a season’s best of 3:33.40 over 1500m in Trier on Wednesday before moving from the track to the roads of Düsseldorf four days later.

His 3:55.33 on Sunday suggests he is carrying strong form into Copenhagen, where he will be joined in the Irish road mile team by Andrew Coscoran, Sophie O’Sullivan and Sarah Healy.

Fay Finishes Ninth in Fast 5K

Brian Fay was the leading Irish competitor in the men’s 5K, finishing ninth in 13:40.81.

Canadian Olympic medallist Moh Ahmed won in 13:14.85, edging Ethiopia’s Abdisa Fayisa by just seven hundredths of a second. American Abdihamid Nur took third in 13:16.41.

Fay’s performance also came ahead of the World Road Running Championships. He has been selected for Ireland in the men’s 5K alongside Darragh McElhinney.

Haggard Kearney Takes Sixth

Emily Haggard Kearney placed sixth in the women’s elite 5K, recording a time of 16:10.87.

Kenya’s Celestine Biwot Jekosgei won the race in 15:17.25, with Elise Stearns of the United States second in 15:24.30 and Britain’s Eloise Walker third in 15:26.08.

Haggard Kearney was the only Irish woman competing at the meeting and secured the second highest Irish placing of the day behind Doyle.

Dunne Completes Irish Mile Contingent

James Dunne joined Doyle in the men’s elite mile and finished 18th in 4:06.

The Tullamore Harriers athlete was competing in an international field containing runners from the United States, Australia, Canada, France, Britain and several other European nations.

Dunne’s appearance completed a four person Irish contingent across the mile and 5K races in Düsseldorf.
