Six Attempts, Six Records and a Beer Can at Yesterday's Sydney Marathon

Six Attempts, Six Records and a Beer Can at Yesterday's Sydney Marathon

Most marathon runners spend the final weeks before a race deciding how little they can carry for 42.195 kilometres.

Six runners at the 2026 Sydney Marathon took a very different approach.

Among more than 40,000 participants on Sunday morning were runners carrying the extra weight of a giant beer can costume, a green turtle outfit, a Scout uniform and traditional Bhutanese clothing.

Others were attempting records connected to serious medical conditions. By the time all six had reached the finish beside the Sydney Opera House, every world record attempt had succeeded.

Toby Fuller Breaks Marathon Record During Cancer Treatment

The quickest of the six record breakers was former professional cyclist Toby Fuller, who completed the marathon in 3:18:01.

Fuller set the record for the fastest marathon by a man with multiple myeloma, an incurable blood cancer affecting plasma cells.

He was diagnosed at the age of 23 and has been living with the condition for five years while receiving maintenance chemotherapy.

Despite the effects of his condition and treatment on his training, Fuller averaged approximately 4:42 per kilometre throughout the race.

It was the fastest of the six record attempts and, by some distance, the most serious story behind any of them.

Kent Ohori Takes Giant Beer Can Below Three Hours and 30 Minutes

The most conspicuous runner of the group was Brisbane athlete Kent Ohori.

Ohori completed the entire marathon inside an enormous orange and white beer can costume, reaching the finish in 3:28:27.

That gave him the Guinness World Record for the fastest marathon dressed as a beer can by a man.

Running a marathon in under three hours and 30 minutes is a considerable achievement in ordinary racing gear. Ohori managed it whilst enclosed inside a costume that made him impossible to miss on the streets of Sydney.

His finishing time represented an average pace of approximately 4:56 per kilometre.

Chris Fyvie Sets Record With Subcutaneous Defibrillator

Chris Fyvie was the third record holder to finish, completing the Sydney Marathon in 3:36:27.

Fyvie set the record for the fastest marathon by a man with a subcutaneous defibrillator.

The device is implanted beneath the skin and monitors the heart, delivering an electrical shock if it detects a dangerous rhythm.

Fyvie maintained an average pace of approximately 5:08 per kilometre to complete the distance. His performance gave the day its second record connected to a serious medical condition.

Unlike the costume attempts taking place around him, the significance of Fyvie’s record was not immediately obvious to spectators. His finishing time ensured it was no less noteworthy.

Phil Brent Carries Environmental Message in Turtle Costume

Phil Brent provided the second major costume story of the day.

The Sydney runner completed the marathon in a full green turtle suit, finishing in 3:45:52 and setting the record for the fastest marathon dressed as a reptile by a man.

The costume was not selected purely for the craic. Brent used his attempt to support the Nature Hates a Tosser campaign, an initiative led by the New South Wales Environment Protection Authority.

The campaign focuses on the damage litter causes to marine life, land animals and waterways.

Brent carried that message around the complete course while maintaining an average pace of approximately 5:21 per kilometre.

Rebecca Joyner Breaks Four Hours in Scout Uniform

The fifth record belonged to Rebecca Joyner, who completed the marathon in 3:55:37.

Her performance established the women’s record for the fastest marathon completed in a Scout uniform.

Joyner averaged approximately 5:35 per kilometre and became the fifth of the six record contenders to finish inside four hours.

A Scout uniform may not be as cumbersome as a giant beer can or turtle costume, but it is hardly conventional marathon clothing. Joyner still completed the course with more than four minutes to spare before the four hour mark.

Nilhari Bhandari Completes Record Sweep in Bhutanese Dress

The final record was secured by Nilhari Bhandari, who completed the race in 4:07:06 while wearing traditional Bhutanese dress.

Bhandari established the men’s record for the fastest marathon completed in traditional Bhutanese clothing.

His performance brought a cultural element to the collection of medical and costume records being attempted across the course.

Bhandari averaged approximately 5:51 per kilometre and ensured that the group finished with a perfect return of six successful attempts from six starters.

Costume marathon records can appear like novelty pursuits, but the finishing times in Sydney told a different story.

Five of the six runners broke four hours. Two went below three hours and 30 minutes. All six completed the distance while carrying an extra physical or medical challenge.

The complete list of verified records can be viewed on the Guinness World Records website.
