Entries are now open for the 2027 AXA Raheny 5 Mile, one of the most popular dates in the Irish road racing calendar.
Organised by Raheny Shamrock AC, the race takes place in Raheny, Dublin, on Sunday, 31 January 2027, with the main event starting at 3pm. Entry is listed at €30 through Eventmaster.
For runners looking for a target to carry them through the winter, it is a date worth putting in the diary. Five miles offers a useful change of pace from the familiar 5K and 10K, and January leaves plenty of time to build towards it.
A January Favourite
Raheny has been part of the Irish racing calendar since 1985, building a history that stretches well beyond the athletes competing at the front.
The 2026 edition attracted more than 4,000 finishers, with the event selling out. That gives anyone considering the next edition a fairly good reason to get their entry sorted early.
There is something appealing about having a race booked before the Christmas decorations go up. By the time January arrives, the decision has already been made. All that remains is getting out for the training.
For those returning to shorter races after an autumn marathon, Raheny also offers a different focus. At just over 8km, the distance gives runners a chance to work towards a quicker effort without immediately committing to another long race build.
Quality At The Front
The race has a strong competitive history, with its list of past winners including Fionnuala McCormack of Kilcoole AC, Mick Clohisey of Raheny Shamrock AC and Mary Cullen of Sligo AC.
In January 2026, Jonas Stafford of UCD AC won the men's race in 23:08, finishing just two seconds ahead of Colm Rooney of Clonliffe Harriers. Michelle Finn of Leevale AC took the women's title in 26:35.
Those performances offer a reminder of the standard Raheny attracts, but the thousands following the leaders are just as much a part of the occasion.
A Race That Supports Club Athletics
The event also plays an important role in the running of Raheny Shamrock AC. The club has described the Raheny 5 as central to its ongoing funding, with members asked to give their time to help deliver race day.
That makes an entry more than a date in an individual training plan. It supports the club and the work behind one of the country's established road races.
The familiar Raheny 5 plaque is promised for all competitors again in 2027, while juvenile races are also listed on the day's programme.
How To Enter
Entries for the main race are now open through Eventmaster, with the entry price listed at €30. Organisers have warned that the event may sell out.
With the previous edition reaching capacity, anyone keen to run would be wise to book early.
