Twice Up Ben of Howth: Gaelforce 10K Returns With a Tough Dublin Trail Test

Forget any plan to settle into a rhythm and tick off ten tidy kilometres on flat roads. The Gaelforce 10K Howth sends runners through fields, woodland and rough trails before asking them to climb Ben of Howth twice.

The trail race returns on Saturday October 10th, with entries still available for runners looking for something rather different from the usual autumn road race.

Based at Deer Park Golf Club beside Howth Castle, the event packs a proper hill running challenge into a location that remains within easy reach of Dublin city centre. There are coastal views at the top, but nobody will be handed them for nothing.

A 10K With Teeth

Ten kilometres can sound manageable on paper. The surface and gradient around Howth quickly change that calculation.

The opening stage begins in the field beside Deer Park Golf Club before moving onto a woodland path and a narrow track leading up the steep ground of Ben of Howth. It is the sort of start that will punish anyone who charges away as though they are racing a flat city 10K.

Once runners reach the upper section, the terrain switches to sealed road before joining the old railway track greenway. That offers a chance to regain some rhythm, although the easier running does not last indefinitely.

At the end of the greenway, the route turns upwards again for a second ascent of Ben of Howth and the push towards the summit. From there, runners follow the trail back down the hill and towards the finish at Deer Park Golf Club.

The constant changes in surface are a major part of the appeal. Grass, woodland, road, greenway and steeper trail all appear within the same race. Road racing times will not mean a great deal once the climbing begins.

The Second Climb Could Decide the Day

The first ascent will demand patience. The second is likely to expose anyone who spent too much energy early on.

Runners accustomed to road events may find that effort matters more than pace. Shortening the stride on the climbs, staying controlled through the woodland and resisting the urge to attack every runnable section should leave more in reserve for the return to the summit.

The descent also brings its own challenge. Tired legs, changing ground and other runners moving at different speeds mean concentration will be needed all the way back to Deer Park.

Trail running shoes are mandatory. A windproof or rainproof jacket is also recommended, which is sensible advice on an exposed coastal hill in October. Conditions around Howth can change quickly, even when Dublin city looks relatively calm below.

Close to the City, Far From a City 10K

One of the strongest points in the event's favour is its location. Many trail races require an early drive deep into the countryside, but Howth can be reached by regular bus and DART services.

Event parking will also be available beside Howth Castle, although organisers are encouraging competitors to use public transport or share cars where possible.

The race will use several starting waves. The first is scheduled for 11:00am, followed by further waves at 15 minute intervals through to 12:00pm. Entrants select their wave during registration, and places in individual waves may disappear as they fill.

Race packs containing the number and timing chip will be posted in advance. An information desk will be available on the morning for anyone whose pack has not arrived or who has a race query.

Competitors must be at least 16 years old on the day. Those aged 16 or 17 will require signed consent from a parent or guardian.

Entry Prices

Registration remains open through the official Gaelforce website.

The published pricing structure rises through €36, €39, €42 and €45 as the event approaches. The rate available at the time of booking will be shown on the registration page. A registration fee of €5.50 applies, while any entry offered on the day will cost €60.

With less than two weeks remaining, runners interested in a particular wave should not leave the decision too late.

More Than a Quick Dash Around Howth

The Gaelforce 10K Howth should suit road runners curious about trying the trails without committing to a half marathon or longer mountain event. It also gives experienced trail runners a short, aggressive course on which there is little room to switch off.

The distance is familiar, but the race is not. Two climbs, several surfaces and a summit above Dublin Bay make this a 10K in name only. Anyone arriving with expectations based on their latest road time may be in for a long morning.

For runners who prefer their autumn racing with mud underfoot and a hill standing between them and the finish, Howth should provide a grand test.

Entries can be made through the official Gaelforce registration page.
