2027 Cork City Marathon Ballot Details Revealed

If you have your sights set on tackling the Cork City Marathon next year, the goalposts have officially shifted. Following a massive, record-breaking turnout in 2026 that saw over 12,300 runners pack the Grand Parade and South Mall, organisers have announced a major shake-up to how entries will be secured.

For the first time in the event’s history, places for the Full Marathon, Half Marathon, and 10K will be allocated via an official ballot system.

The standard mad dash to the keyboard on registration day is gone. Instead, the window to stake your claim for the June 6, 2027 race opens at 9:00 AM on Monday, June 15th and will run until midnight on Tuesday, June 30th.

"The Fairest Way Forward"

Race Director Eamon Hayes noted that the transition to a lottery format was born out of sheer necessity due to the event's surging popularity both at home and abroad.

"We have carefully considered the options available to us and believe a ballot system is the fairest and most transparent way to allocate places across the Full Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K events," Hayes stated. "It ensures that everyone who wants to participate has an equal opportunity to secure a place, rather than missing out because entries sell out quickly."

How It Works: The Logistics

Navigating the new system is straightforward, but there are a few key rules and dates every runner needs to mark in their training diary:

  • The Admin Fee: Entering the ballot requires a €5 administration fee. If you are successful, this €5 is knocked off your final entry fee. If the luck of the draw isn't with you, the €5 is fully refunded.
  • Multi-Distance Entries: You can technically throw your hat in the ring for multiple distances. While the organisers note it's unlikely you'll draw more than one, anyone who does land double entries will be allowed to transfer the unwanted spot during the official transfer window.
  • The 2026 Loyalty Factor: If you laced up and raced in 2026, take note: regular participants will be recognised within the ballot process. Make sure to indicate your 2026 participation when registering so the team can verify it.
  • D-Day (Results): The wait won't be too long. All applicants will find out their fate on July 21st. For the lucky winners, the remaining entry balance will be automatically processed on July 28th, which is the same day unsuccessful runners will receive their admin fee refunds.
The Fine Print: Transfers, Deferrals, and "Good for Age"

As with any major marathon transition, there are strict boundary lines to keep the event running smoothly:

No Distance Swapping

Once you secure a spot in a specific distance via the ballot, you are locked in. No transfers between race categories will be permitted. If you win a 10K spot, you cannot upgrade to the Half, or vice versa.

Good for Age & Concessions

  • Good for Age: The fast movers among us don't need to panic just yet. A dedicated Good for Age entry system will operate separately, opening up in August.
  • Concessions: Social welfare recipients and those eligible for concession rates should enter the ballot as normal, selecting the appropriate option. Verification will happen post-ballot before the spot is fully locked in.

Deferred Entries

If you successfully deferred your 2026 entry, you can skip the ballot entirely. Eligible deferred runners will be sent a direct, dedicated registration link once the ballot process wraps up.

A New Chapter for the Rebel County

With its revised start and finish lines on Grand Parade and South Mall proving to be a massive hit with both athletes and spectators, the Cork City Marathon has firmly cemented its status as an international-calibre event.

Whether you're targeting the full 26.2, testing your limits in the half, or chasing a PB in the 10K, the road to Cork 2027 officially starts next Monday.
