The final stop on this year’s World Marathon Majors takes over New York today. More than 55,000 runners will set off from Staten Island and make their way through all five boroughs before the famous finish in Central Park. It’s the last big one of the year, and the line-up is stacked with star power.
The Men’s Race
All attention turns to Eliud Kipchoge, who will finally complete his goal of running every World Marathon Major. The two-time Olympic champion joins an elite group that includes Dutch title holder Abdi Nageeye, Ethiopian great Kenenisa Bekele, and past New York winners Benson Kipruto and Albert Korir.
Kipchoge will face one of the most unpredictable courses on the circuit, a route that often rewards patience over pace. If the veterans can time it right, there could be a few surprises over the closing miles through Manhattan.
The Women’s Race
Sifan Hassan headlines a world-class women’s field. The Dutch Olympic champion comes in off another victory at the Sydney Marathon, and she’ll face serious opposition from Kenya’s Sharon Lokedi, Sheila Chepkirui, and Hellen Obiri, all former New York winners.
Ireland’s own Fionnuala McCormack will also take to the start line. The Wicklow star, a five-time Olympian with a marathon best of 2:23:46, has been one of the most consistent performers in the European distance scene for over a decade. She will be targeting another strong performance in the Big Apple.
Other big names to watch include Ethiopia’s Gotytom Gebreslase, American record holder Emily Sisson, and former Olympic medallist Molly Seidel.
When it’s On
Race coverage begins from 1.00pm Irish and UK time, with the elite women setting off around 1.35pm and the men following at 2.05pm. The wheelchair events start shortly before that, and the leading runners are expected in Central Park between 4.30 and 5.00pm.
How to Watch
Fans in Ireland and the UK can catch the full race live on Discovery+ and TNT Sports, with coverage starting at 1.30pm. Across continental Europe, the marathon will also stream live on Eurosport and the Discovery+ platform.
The global broadcast includes ESPN, Fox Sports, SuperSport, and several other international networks for viewers around the world.
The Course and Prize
The race travels through Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Manhattan before finishing in Central Park. It’s one of the toughest courses in marathon running and rarely decided until the final stretch.
Both the men’s and women’s champions will earn $100,000, with prize money extending to the top ten and a $50,000 bonus for anyone who breaks the course record.
