Only 1% Get In As 2026 New York City Marathon Ballot Numbers Surge

Thousands of runners around the world logged in yesterday evening to the familiar sight of a rejection email as the ballot results for the 2026 New York City Marathon were released.

The world’s largest marathon once again proved brutally difficult to get into. According to organisers New York Road Runners, just 1% of applicants secured a place through the ballot this year.

With more than 240,000 runners entering the lottery, the odds were always going to be steep. For the overwhelming majority, the dream of running through the five boroughs will have to wait another year.

Demand For The Race Keeps Climbing

If the numbers feel staggering, that is because they are.

This year’s ballot saw a 20 percent increase in applications compared with 2025, pushing the total number of hopeful runners to record levels. Interest in the race continues to surge globally, with applications coming from 160 different countries.

For many runners, the New York City Marathon sits near the very top of the bucket list. The race has built a reputation not just for its scale but for its atmosphere, with huge crowds lining the course from Staten Island to Central Park.

The demand reflects that reputation. Even as more runners take up the sport each year, the number of places available through the ballot remains extremely limited.

A Milestone Year Ahead

The upcoming race will also carry extra significance.

The 2026 edition will mark the 50th running of the New York City Marathon, a milestone that likely helped push ballot entries even higher than usual.

From its modest beginnings in 1970 with just a few hundred runners circling Central Park, the event has grown into one of the most iconic races in the world.

Today it forms part of the Abbott World Marathon Majors, alongside races such as London, Boston, Chicago, Berlin, and Tokyo.

Not The Only Route To The Start Line

While the ballot offers the most direct way into the race, it is far from the only route.

Many runners gain entry through charity programmes, travel packages, or by completing qualifying times in previous races. Others take part through the 9+1 programme run by New York Road Runners, which allows local runners to earn guaranteed entry by completing a set number of events.

Still, for runners around the world, the annual ballot remains the main chance to secure a coveted bib.

And judging by this year’s numbers, the appetite to run New York shows no sign of slowing down.

For now, thousands of disappointed applicants will simply have to do what runners do best: dust themselves off, enter again next year, and hope the lottery gods are in a better mood.
