Kamworor vs Cheptegei : Who Will win the Clash of the Titans in the Antrim Coast Half this Sunday?

The Antrim Coast Half Marathon has always had a touch of drama about it, but this year it’s stepping up another gear. On Sunday 24 August, the stunning Coast Road will play host to what’s being billed as the strongest elite field in UK and Irish distance running history.

More than 100 elite athletes from 19 nations across four continents are set to line up, while the mass race brings in entries from over 40 additional countries. In total, over 6,000 runners are expected to take part, with close to half of them travelling from outside Northern Ireland. Throw in around 10,000 spectators, and Larne will be buzzing with an atmosphere you’d usually only find at a Champions League night in Anfield, just with more Lycra and fewer pints.

From humble beginnings to global stage

The race only launched in 2020, back when mass participation meant a socially-distanced field of 60 people. Even so, it made headlines straight away thanks to Sir Mo Farah’s victory, which turned out to be the fastest ever domestic half marathon in the UK or Ireland. Since then, the event has seen everything from an unratified world record to an explosion in popularity, transforming into one of the must-run races on the global calendar.

The men’s race: heavyweight clash

This year’s men’s field is led by none other than reigning double Olympic champion Joshua Cheptegei, who arrives in flying form before moving up to the marathon in Amsterdam. His biggest rival is Kenya’s Geoffrey Kamworor, a seven-time world champion across cross country and half marathon. With the best in the world tackling one of the fastest courses around, this could be the greatest men’s half marathon ever staged on UK or Irish soil.

The women’s race: all eyes on Kasait

The women’s field is headlined by Lillian Kasait of Kenya, the fourth fastest half marathoner of all time, who will be aiming to light up Larne with something special. She’ll be joined by a deep international field, including former and current European record holders, promising a race that should keep spectators on edge right to the finish.

Local interest

Irish eyes will be watching Paul O’Donnell closely after his recent 2:10 marathon, as he aims to push the Irish record over 13.1 miles. Ryan Creech will also be on the hunt for a new personal best in the 61–62 minute range. With strong European representation as well, there’s plenty of hope for a homegrown challenge against the East African favourites.

Where to watch

For fans, the finish line area and Larne Main Street are the best spots to soak up the atmosphere. Full details, including the spectator guide, are available on the race website. Be aware of road closures and traffic restrictions on the day, arriving early is the safest bet unless you fancy a long walk before the runners even start.

More than just a race

The economic impact is set to be massive, with an expected £3.5–4 million boost for the Mid and East Antrim Borough. In just five years, the Antrim Coast Half Marathon has grown into a multicultural celebration, drawing runners and supporters from all over the world.

And if you’re travelling up for the weekend, we’ve already covered the important part: where to get a hearty plate of food and maybe a pint the night before (or the night after, medal in hand). Find all the Larne bars and restaurants here
