How To Watch Irish Athletes In Action In Norway This Evening

Several Irish athletes will be in action at the Trond Mohn Games in Bergen, Norway this evening, with a mix of established names and athletes continuing strong early season form. John Kelly heads into the men’s shot put as the current Irish national silver medallist both indoors and outdoors, continuing his steady rise in the event on the international circuit.

There will also be strong Irish interest in the women’s 1500m, where both Laura Nicholson and Jodie McCann line up. Nicholson has already built up a lengthy outdoor campaign due to competing in the Southern Hemisphere during the Irish winter, making this her 10th outdoor outing of the season. She has already picked up three victories this year, one in Australia and two in Japan, across both the mile and 1500m. She arrives in Bergen carrying a season’s best of 4:07.52 and will be aiming to continue sharpening her form against another quality field.

McCann, meanwhile, will be making just her second outdoor appearance of the season. The Dublin City Harriers athlete opened her outdoor campaign in Germany last week, clocking 4:13.78, and will be hoping to build on that performance with another strong run in Norway.

Elsewhere, Sophie O'Sullivan returns to action in the women’s 800m. This will be her third outdoor outing of the season, though her opening two races both came over 1500m. The race marks her first competitive 800m since September of last year as she drops back down in distance in Bergen.

In the men’s 1500m, Darragh McElhinney will make his outdoor track season debut following a solid indoor campaign earlier this year. The Cork athlete won the 3000m at the Boston University John Thomas Terrier Classic at the end of January before later finishing runner up in the 3000m at the Irish Senior Indoor Championships.
