Last weekend saw the return of the Cork County Track and Field Championships to a Cork
Track in the newly renovated MTU complex. Traditionally the T & F season would have
concluded by now but credit Cork Athletics for giving young athletes the opportunity to get
some valuable experience in a relaxed atmosphere. The U15-U19 Championships were held
on Saturday and Peter Hawkins picked up a silver medal in the U18 3000m running 10:30. It
was a tactical affair with the lead changing hands several times during the race before the
podium places were decided with a strong finish from Peter! The U9-U14 Juvenile ‘B’
Championships followed on Sunday 18 th and Carraig Na BhFear AC were well represented
across a range of events. Laoighse Nott had a 6 th place finish in the girls U13 600m and won
silver in the Shot Putt competition throwing 5:48m. Emma Johnson had a fast finish in the
Girls U14 800m to win gold in 2:38:46 with Hannah Coffey finishing 4 th in 2:48:80. Travis de
Souza was in great form winning Gold in the Boys U13 long Jump with a best jump of 4:04m
and a bronze in the 60m. Aoibhe Dunlea had a fine jump of 3.88m to win the girls U14 long
jump and made it double gold by winning the U14 girls 80m sprint!. Well done to everyone
who competed so well!
The traditional St.Finbarrs AC 10-miler was replaced this year with a 10k race due to the
upgrade of the traditional course in the marina area, it was a great success due to superb
organization and a super course. The race started at Fitzgerald Park before a hilly Lee Road
and a finish in the Lee fields at the end of a never-ending Carrigrohane Straight! In a large
field of 792 runners there were some excellent performances from our club members. Timmy
Hawkins was 23 rd overall in a time of 34:59 with Tadhg Crowley running a big PB for 31 st
place in a time of 35:41. Conor Kelly (39:14), Richard Hawkins (40:33, Siobhan Walsh
(44:43), Anita Casey (56:54), Cora Lynch (59:02) and Rachel McCarthy (59:52) finished well
up the field, all pacing the course well and finishing under the hour mark!
Look Ahead: The East Cork 5000m Championships will be held in MTU on Wednesday 28 th
August at 8:15pm, a great PB opportunity on a fast track for members of clubs affiliated to
the East Cork Athletics association.
