There are fast races, scenic races, and charity races and then there are the ones that genuinely matter to the people who organise them and the community they serve. The Castleknock 5km, taking place this Sunday 15th June at 11am, is one of those rare events that carries weight, memory, and meaning in every step.
From Tribute to Tradition
Now in its 11th year, this community fixture was first held in 2014 to honour the memory of Rory Doherty, a much-loved local man whose legacy still ripples through the streets of Castleknock. What began as a tribute quickly took root, becoming an annual tradition that has grown in size, spirit, and impact. Since that first edition, the race has raised over €220,000 for charities including St. Francis Hospice, the Irish Red Cross, Connolly Hospital’s Stroke Unit, and Cystic Fibrosis Ireland. It’s a day that brings people together, not just to race, but to reflect, remember, and give something back.
A Community Effort
Organised entirely by volunteers from Metro St Brigid’s AC, the Castleknock 5km has become one of the most welcoming and uplifting events on Dublin’s summer running calendar. Entrants can expect a great crowd, chip timing, enthusiastic marshals, and a feel-good buzz that’s hard to replicate.
The route begins in the leafy grounds of Castleknock College, before winding through Phoenix Park and finishing in Castleknock village, a route that manages to be both fast and friendly, and just as enjoyable for those cheering from the sidelines. It’s spectator-friendly, family-friendly, and Father’s Day–friendly too, the sort of event where generations turn out together and everyone leaves with something, even if it’s not a medal.
Sold Out and Still Giving
This year’s race is now completely sold out, with all 2,000 places snapped up well in advance , a fantastic endorsement of how deeply embedded this race has become in the local calendar. And with 30% of all profits going directly to this year's chosen charity St. Francis Hospice, that impact will stretch far beyond the finish line.
The Castleknock 5km has always been more than just simply a 5k run, it’s a celebration of community, memory and giving back. And this Sunday, that spirit will be out in force once again.
