Coláiste Mhuire 6K To Bring Unique Finish Outside Iconic Semple Stadium

There is no shortage of road races on the Irish calendar in May, but very few can offer runners the chance to finish beside one of the most iconic venues in Irish sport.
On Saturday, May 17th, Coláiste Mhuire in Thurles will host the inaugural Coláiste Mhuire 6K Fun Run, with participants set to finish outside the famous Semple Stadium, long regarded as the spiritual home of hurling outside of Croke Park itself.
Starting at 11am from the grounds of the school, the event is shaping up to be far more than simply another local road race. Organisers are aiming to create a genuine community occasion, welcoming runners, joggers, walkers and even dogs along a route that mixes town sections with quieter country roads around Thurles.
The Course: From Campus to Cathedral of Hurling
Starting within the grounds of Coláiste Mhuire, the 6km loop is designed to keep runners engaged. After an early glimpse of the greyhound track on Castlemeadows Road, the field will head out the Grange Road, passing the one-kilometre mark with views of Thurles Racecourse.
The mid-section of the race offers a welcome change of pace, guiding participants through quieter L and R roads heading south then back in towards town. After sweeping back through Kennedy Park at the 5km mark, runners will face a truly "iconic" final stretch. The race culminates in a memorable finish just outside Semple Stadium, a venue that has seen many a Tipperary hero cross a line, though rarely in running flats!
The course is plotted below:
Inclusivity at its Core
Speaking ahead of the event, race organiser Laura emphasised that while the front of the pack will be competitive, the spirit of the day is firmly rooted in community.
"CMCO is built around community, so making this event suitable for all is so important to us," Laura explains. "We want our school community to come together in an enjoyable way to raise funds for our extracurricular activities. The response so far from local clubs and businesses has been fantastic."
In a move that will please pet owners, the event is fully dog-friendly, with a special prize even designated for the "Best Dog on the Day."
Prizes and Post-Race Perks
For those with an eye on the podium, there is plenty to run for. Cash prizes of €75 and €50 are on offer for the first and second male and female finishers, with a hamper for third. Local pride is also at stake, with trophies for the first male and female student from each year group, as well as the "First Teacher" across the line.
Once the hard work is done, the recovery begins immediately. The Runner Bean Coffee Box will be on-site to provide the caffeine fix, alongside plenty of refreshments and a celebratory atmosphere that the organisers hope will become an annual fixture on the Tipperary running calendar.
