With the Dublin Marathon looming at the end of October, runners across Ireland are busy searching for that final long run to lock in their fitness. On Saturday 4 October, just three weeks out, a brand-new event near Lisburn might have exactly what they need.
The McKinney Games is a new race series taking place at the Eikon Centre, offering a full menu of distances, from a kids’ 1K to a full marathon, including a 20-mile race tailor-made for those prepping for Dublin.
And in true McKinney style, there’s a twist: every runner who finishes gets a prize.
A New Marathon Close to Belfast
The McKinney Games marathon adds a fresh option to the autumn calendar for runners keen to go the full distance without travelling far. Taking place at the Eikon Centre (a large events venue located just off the M1 motorway about 20 minutes southwest of Belfast, near Sprucefield) near Lisburn, it’s one of the few marathons in Northern Ireland outside of Belfast itself and for many runners, the location offers a more accessible alternative. The inclusion of a 20-miler also makes it a timely fixture for those building towards Dublin at the end of the month.
“We didn’t want this to be just another race where only the fastest walk away with something,” said Stephanie Daly, one of the organisers behind the McKinney Games. “It’s all about making the day memorable for everyone who shows up and takes part.”
All races start and finish at the Eikon Centre, with flat, looped road courses. Timing and results will be handled by Champion Chip Ireland, with chip timing and officially measured distances across all events.
Facilities include on-site parking, toilets, secure bag drop, and a full race village with music, stalls, and MC announcements throughout the day.
All About the Options
The McKinney Games features seven distances, all taking place on Saturday 4 October:
- 1K Kids’ Fun Run
- 5K – £19.50
- 10K – £34.50
- 10 Miles – £36.50
- Half Marathon – £39.50
- 20 Miles – £44.50
- Full Marathon – £49.50
For those training for Dublin, the 20-miler falls at the ideal point in a typical marathon plan, far enough out to recover fully, long enough to test fuelling, pacing, and nerves.
Organisers say the course is flat and PB-friendly, with wide-open roads and a loop layout designed for ease of access. Cut-off times for the longer distances will be generous, allowing runners of all levels to finish in comfort.
“We wanted to create something inclusive,” Stephanie added. “From first-timers to seasoned runners chasing a new PB, we’re welcoming everyone.”
What's in the Envelope?
Every runner who finishes receives a sealed envelope. Inside is a random prize, ranging from McKinney site credit to actual cash, including a top prize of £5,000.
The total prize pot? A whopping £100,000.
There will still be traditional podium prizes for top finishers, but the envelope system means the biggest prize of the day could end up in the hands of someone finishing mid-pack or even walking it in.
And in keeping with McKinney’s usual unpredictability, there’ll also be spot prizes, raffles, and surprise giveaways on the day.
Supporting Air Ambulance NI
The event is also raising funds for Air Ambulance Northern Ireland, who operate the region’s emergency medical helicopter service. Organisers recently visited the Air Ambulance base and confirmed the charity will be one of the race’s key beneficiaries.
Entry Includes:
- A custom-designed medal
- Post-race snacks and water
- Chip timing by Championship Ireland
- Secure baggage area
- On-site parking and facilities
The event is capped to manage flow across the course, so early registration is advised for those eyeing up one of the longer distances.
So if you're getting your long run done ahead of Dublin, or just fancy a Saturday race with a bit of buzz and the chance to win a few quid, the McKinney Games is an intriguing new addition to the race calendar.
