Providence Dominance And Breakthrough PBs Highlight Irish NCAA Weekend

The NCAA outdoor season continued to gather pace across the United States last week, with Irish athletes delivering a wide spread of results across sprints, distance, relays, and field events. From standout individual wins to deep team contributions, it was another packed few days of competition.
Quinn Opens With Podium Finish At Illinois
At the Illini Deca-Jam in Champaign, Illinois, Siún Quinn made the most of competing on home soil for the University of Illinois. The Irish high jumper cleared 1.78m to secure second place, continuing a steady start to her outdoor campaign with the Illini.
Aigboboh And Nestor In Action In Texas
The 44 Farms Team Invitational in College Station, Texas saw Irish interest split across sprint and middle distance events.
Representing the University of Houston, Seán Aigboboh delivered one of the headline performances of the meet. He stormed to victory in the 200m in 20.54, a personal best that moves him to 6th on the Irish all time list and achieved the Athletics Ireland ‘B’ Standard for the Euros in Birmingham in this summer. He also placed second in the 100m in 10.21, though the +3.5 wind reading ruled it out for record purposes.
For Rice University, Susie Nestor contested the 800m for the Owls, finishing twelfth in 2:14.87.
Gleeson Hits World U20 Standard
At the UW Platteville Invitational in Wisconsin, Cillian Gleeson produced a major breakthrough performance for the University of Wisconsin. The Irish athlete dominated the 5000m, taking victory in 13:54.27. The run not only marked a significant personal best, but also secured the World U20 qualifying standard in emphatic fashion.
Distance Efforts Across Multiple Meets
At the Messiah Invitational in Pennsylvania, Laura McConville represented Mount St. Mary’s University over 10,000m, finishing eighth in 42:25.98 with a new personal best.
The Duke Invitational in Durham, North Carolina brought together a deep field of Irish distance runners across multiple universities. Seán Cronin, competing for La Salle University, impressed with a personal best of 3:40.26 to take third in the 1500m. In the same event, Villanova University’s Seán Donoghue clocked 3:42.71, while Boston College’s Claire Crowley and Catawba College’s Emer McGlynn recorded times of 4:26.59 and 4:36.69 respectively.
Over 5000m, Villanova’s Jack Fenlon delivered a strong fifth place finish in 13:44.87, another personal best performance.
Irish Athletes Shine At Friar Invitational
The Friar Invitational in Providence, Rhode Island stood out as one of the most productive meets of the weekend for Irish athletes, particularly those representing Providence College.
Leading the charge for Providence, Maeve O’Neill stormed to victory in the 800m in 2:02.22, while teammate Gemma Galvin followed closely with second place in the invitational section in 2:08.59. Dartmouth College’s Emmy Thornton also impressed, finishing second in the open 800m in 2:14.53.
Providence’s strength in depth was clear across the distance events. Cormac Dixon took control of the 3000m to win in 8:19.62, while Anna Gardiner delivered a standout performance over 5000m, claiming victory in a personal best of 15:51.78. Teammate Jane Buckley added a fifth place finish in the same event in 16:18.42.
The mile events also saw Irish success. Cara Laverty, representing Providence College, won the invitational mile in 4:44.79, with Grace Weigele of Stony Brook University finishing second in 4:47.56. In the open mile, Iona University’s Scott Fagan took victory in 4:11.26.
Elsewhere, Northeastern University’s Conall Rogers and Holy Cross athlete Liam Lyons competed in the 800m, with Lyons securing second place in 1:49.88.
Relay And Field Contributions Across The Board
At the Spec Towns Invitational in Athens, Georgia, David Davitt played his part for the University of Pennsylvania as their 4x400m relay squad finished fourth in 3:03.74.
The Chicagoland Outdoor Championships saw Roisin Treacy represent Loyola University Chicago, finishing fifth in the 1500m in 4:26.10.
At the Arkansas Spring Invitational in Fayetteville, Sarah Hosey competed for the University of Tulsa in the 800m, running 2:18.15.
Field events also saw Irish representation across several meets. At the UMass Commonwealth Invitational in Amherst, Daire Mahon of Harvard University cleared 1.92m to finish third in the high jump. Meanwhile, at the Ed Daniels Classic, Una Brice placed fourth in the pole vault with UMass Lowell, clearing 3.05m.
Strong Showing In Throws And Jumps
At the Bill Bippes Cougar Classic in Indiana, Liam Shaw competed across three disciplines for Goshen College, placing second in the discus with 45.48m, third in the shot put with 13.20m, and thirteenth in the hammer. Teammate Evan O’Toole added a fifth place finish in the long jump with 6.16m, while Caoimhe Farrell also represented Goshen across hurdles and high jump.
The Rutgers Relays in New Jersey saw Cian McKenna compete in three throwing events for Felician University, alongside Kate Connolly, who ran 4:57.98 in the 1500m for Wagner College.
Relay Success For Florida State
At the Dick Roberts Seminole Invitational in Tallahassee, Florida State University athletes were heavily involved in relay success. Lucy-May Sleeman played a key role as the Seminoles secured victory in both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays, alongside her second place finish in the 100m in 11.49.
Teammate Nicole Dinan added a second place finish in the 800m in 2:12.56, continuing her consistent early season form for Florida State.
Multi Event And Relay Performances
At the Hurricane Alumni Invitational in Florida, Ashleigh McArdle represented DePaul University in the heptathlon, finishing ninth overall with 4331 points. Her performance included strong placings in the shot put and javelin, where she ranked second in both disciplines.
Finally, at the Asheville Bulldog Invitational in North Carolina, Nathan Cremin contributed to Montreat College’s third place finish in the 4x400m relay, with the team clocking 3:19.28.
With personal bests, podium finishes, and a particularly strong collective display at the Friar Invitational, Irish athletes continue to make a serious early season impact across the NCAA circuit.
