Rhasidat Adeleke to Headline Irish Interest in Luzern Tomorrow Evening

Rhasidat Adeleke headlines a sizeable Irish contingent in action at the Spitzen Leichtathletik Luzern meeting on Wednesday evening as the Irish record holder continues her return from injury at one of Europe's leading Continental Tour meetings.

The 2024 Euro silver medalist and Irish record holder is set to contest the women's 200 metres, not long after withdrawing from the Monaco Diamond League, with the race representing another important opportunity to build momentum ahead of the European Athletics Championships qualification deadline.

With just 11 days remaining before the qualification window closes on July 26th, every race now carries added significance for Adeleke. Having already achieved the B standard in the 200 metres with 22.86 earlier this season, she remains outside the World Athletics rankings required to strengthen her qualification prospects.

Dropping back to the shorter sprint could also prove a timely move after her return over 400 metres at the Prefontaine Classic, where she remained competitive through the opening half of the race before fading over the closing stages.

However, Adeleke is far from the only Irish athlete in action, with competitors spread across the sprints, middle distance, jumps, throws and relay events.

Sprint Squad Out in Force

Ireland will be heavily represented across the sprint programme.

Adeleke lines up in the women's 200 metres A Final, while Lauren Roy, Katie Bergin, Benjamin Richardson and Mark Smyth all contest the 200 metres B Finals.

The women's 100 metres sees Lauren Roy compete in the A Final, with Lucy May Sleeman entered in the C Final and both Sarah Leahy and Precious Akpe Moses lining up in the D Final.

On the men's side, Benjamin Richardson races in the 100 metres B Final, while Bori Akinola and Lucas Fadden are entered in the C Final.

Ireland also fields teams in both 4x100 metre relays.

The women's quartet of Lucy May Sleeman, Lauren Roy, Sarah Leahy and Precious Akpe Moses will contest the final, while the men's team of Max O'Reilly, Sean Aigboboh, Mark Smyth and Bori Akinola are also in 4x100m action.

Middle Distance Representation

Ireland also has a strong presence in the middle distance events.

Emma Moore and Alex O'Neill are both entered in the women's 800 metres B Final, while Callum Morgan and Eoin Smyth line up over 3,000 metres.

Field Events

In the field, Elizabeth Ndudi and Lauren Callaghan contest the women's long jump, while Conor Cusack competes in the javelin B Final.

As is often the case during the busy mid summer athletics schedule, the start lists remain subject to change. The finals listed below were confirmed by the organisers just this evening, but withdrawals and late alterations are still possible before competition gets underway.

Important Night for Adeleke

Although Irish athletes will be competing throughout the programme, much of the attention will remain on Adeleke.

After an injury disrupted 12 months that included repeated hamstring setbacks and a difficult return to competition in Eugene, Wednesday night's 200 metres offers another opportunity to rebuild confidence and fitness before the qualification window closes.

She is also expected to return to the 400 metres at Saturday's KBC Night of Athletics meeting in Heusden-Zolder, giving the Irish star another chance to improve her standing before the European Championships selection picture is finalised.
