Background
Andrew Coscoran is the holder of five national records and has made three global finals – all indoors. He started his juvenile career with Star of the Sea and has remained with the club ever since. During his juvenile career he was a strong cross-country runner and it was at Cross Country that he made his first major international appearance. Back in 2013 he competed at the European u20 Cross Country in Serbia where he finished 40th. The second Irishman home behind Sean Tobin in 9th. It was however at 1500m that his true ability was emerging. He finished 8th at the European u20 1500m final in 2015.
In the aftermath of Covid under the guidance of Feidhlim Kelly he started to emerge as a serious international athlete. 2021 marked that turning point for Coscoran. 7th in the European Indoors 1500m final in Poland, along with competing in his first Olympic Games in Tokyo. To cap the year off, he was a member of the Cross-Country relay team that finished 4th in the European Cross-Country in Dublin. Qualification for World Championships, European Championships followed on in 2022. By 2023 he was appearing in Diamond League races and set a new national record in the 1500m. A record which sees him remain at the top of the Irish 1500m all-time list.
The Star of the Sea athlete joined the Manchester based New Balance group and is now coached by Helen Clitheroe. Changes to his training resulted in his 2025 indoor season being his best ever. He set three new national records over 1500m, 1 mile and 3000m, won the New Balance Indoor meet in Boston, finished 6th in the European and World Indoors over 3000m. This summer has seen further personal records and improvements. He surprised many with his 3000m Grand Slam win in the Miami, and subsequently setting a new 5000m personal best of 5:11.47 at the Track Fest meet in California. He won the national 5000m, beating the National record holder Brian Fay. Aiming for the double he made a gallant attempt to beat and almost caught Cathal Doyle in the 1500m.
Coscoran has competed in two Olympic Games, two European Indoors, two world Indoors and Tokyo will be his third World Championship appearance where he will compete over both 1500m and 5000m.
