Fantastic Running and Glorious Weather: Recap of the Ballyneale 5km Road Race in Carrick-on-Suir

May 01, 2024

The Annual Ballyneale 5km Road race hosted by Carrick-on-Suir AC Roadrunners as part of the Outfield Sports, 3 counties Summer Race Series was held on Friday 19th of April. Notably the race attracted a good number of runners totalling 122. It was perhaps no surprise that people were anxious to get out and run as it just happened to be the finest evening of the Year to date.

The sun shone down on the roads of the home of Thomas Francis Kiely, the Olympic gold medallist at the 1904 games in St. Louis, Missouri representing Ireland. It is fitting and an honour to host a race in the birth place of this great athlete.

Good news for the runners was that this fast course had just received a newly re-tarmacadamed road for the first 1.5km on the downhill section which is also partly the 800m finish.

First past the post was the host club’s own Dermot Gorman in a time of 16:30. First of the ladies was the ever-energetic Keeley Tideswell of Clonmel AC in 17:37.

In the other men’s Categories we had M40 James Maher, M45 Patrick Roche, M50 David Ryan, M55 Eugene O’Keeffe and M60 Willie O’ Donoghue.

In the Female categories we had, FJ Grainne Moore, F40 Sarah Whelan, F45 Suzanne Shine, F50 Angela McCann, F55 Jacinta Brazil, F60 Mags Power.

Carrick-on-Suir took both male and female teams prizes also.
